Akemi Takada (1955, Tokyo - Giappone) è la celebre illustratrice e character designer di anime e videogiochi giapponese, mamma di Creamy. Il suo tratto romantico è entrato nei nostri cuori sin dall’infanzia grazie a cartoni animati come L’incantevole Creamy [Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami] ed È quasi magia Johnny [Kimagure Orenji Rōdo], ed oggi che siamo cresciuti possiamo ammirarne gli svariati artbook e le delicate illustrazioni dalle atmosfere sognanti.

Akemi Takada (1955, Tokyo - Japan) is the famous illustrator and character designer of Japanese anime and video games, Creamy’s mother. Her romantic stroke is in our hearts from childhood thanks to cartoons like Magical Angel Creamy Mami [Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami] and Kimagure Orange Road [Kimagure Orenji Rōdo], and today we can admire her artbooks and her delicate illustrations with dreamy atmospheres.

Altra attività da lei intrapresa, è quella di designer di gioielli in argento e pietre, disponibili solo tramite web sul territorio giapponese. Dal 2007 la nuova linea unisex Angel Mythos accompagna la romantica linea Diakosmos dallo stile angelico che ricorda i bijoux indossati dai suoi personaggi.

She is also a jewelry designer and uses materials like silver and stones, only available from the web on from Japan. Since 2007, the new unisex Angel Mythos line match with the romantic and angelic Diakosmos line which reminds jewelry worn by her characters.

Sabato 24 ottobre il Kawaii Team ha potuto partecipare alla conferenza stampa di Akemi Takada, ospite di Yamato Video presso lo shop di Milano. Un evento a numero chiuso, al quale avrebbero potuto accedere solo i primi che avessero inviato una mail (ad Angela non sfugge mai nulla!). Si è avverato un sogno.
Akemi indossava un dolcevita fucsia e portava al collo la sua collana Crystal Point. Piccola e minuta, con un caschetto nero, ci ha stupito con la sua timidezza, le sue battute (tradotte simultaneamente dal giapponese all’italiano) e la sua spensieratezza. Ha persino fotografato il pubblico che stava di fronte a lei ed ha postato la fotografia sul suo blog.

On Saturday October 24th the Kawaii Team attended the press conference where Akemi Takada was received by Yamato Video at the shop in Milan. An event with limited entry, where could only partecipate the first who sent an email (Angela doesn’t let any opportunity slip!). It was a dream come true.
Akemi wore a pink turtleneck and wore around her necklace Crystal Point. She is small and petite, with a black bob and we were impressed by her shyness, her jokes (simultaneously translated from Japanese to Italian) and her lightheartedness. She even photographed the audience in front of her and posted the photo on her blog.

• 1. Qual è stato il personaggio più difficile da realizzare?
  What was the character more difficult to design?

La serie più impegnativa per cui ho lavorato è certamente Patlabor, perchè a differenza di Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami, per esempio, ha dei personaggi più adulti, anche anziani, e ho affrontato un design diverso dal genere che tratto di solito.
The toughest series I’ve worked on is certainly Patlabor, because unlike Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami, for example, it has more adults, even aged, and I made a different design from the ordinary.

• 2. Sta lavorando su dei nuovi character o serie?
  Are you working on a new character or series?

Dallo scorso anno sto lavorando a nuove opere che hanno uno stile più simile a Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami [ndr. L'incantevole Creamy] e kawaii rispetto a Patlabor, ma è ancora presto per parlarne. Sono dei lavori legati a dei nuovi artbook e non a delle serie specifiche.
Since last year I’m working on new works that have a style more similar to Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami[editor's note. Magical Angel Creamy Mami] and more kawaii than Patlabor, but it is still early to talk about it. They are works for new artbooks and not for specific series.

• 3. Come riesce a coniugare la sua attività di illustratrice, character designer e designer di gioielli?
  How do you combine your career as an illustrator, character designer and jewelry designer?

Non so se posso essere riconosciuta come designer di gioielli dato che i gioielli che hanno più successo si chiamano Creamy Mami e Madoka, comunque sia mentre creo dei personaggi o dei gioielli vi infondo le mie emozioni e dò forma alle mie idee. I personaggi e le idee hanno in comune le stesse emozioni.
I do not know if I can be recognized as a jewelry designer because the most successful jewels are called Creamy Mami and Madoka, however while I’m creating the characters or the jewels i will inspire them with my emotions and i give shape to my ideas. The characters and the ideas have in common the same emotions.

• 4. È uscito un artbook dedicato interamente a Madoka “La Madonna” e pochi anni fa era sempre uscito un monografico su questo personaggio. Come mai questa scelta?
  It was published an artbook dedicated entirely to Madoka “The Madonna” and a few years ago it was always released a monograph on this character. Why this choice?

Il mio personaggio preferito è Creamy Mami e mi piace sempre affrontare questo personaggio, ma in Giappone e specialmente il pubblico maschile preferisce Madoka, inoltre nel 2007 era stato celebrato il 20° anniversario di Kimagure Orenji Rōdo [ndr. È quasi magia Johnny, tratto dal manga Orange Road. La Takada si è occupata del character design per la versione animata prodotta dallo Studio Pierrot] e in questa ricorrenza si era deciso di far uscire un box dvd e un artbook.
My favorite character is Creamy Mami and I always like to deal with this character, but in Japan and especially the male audience prefers Madoka, also in 2007 it was celebrated the 20th anniversary of Kimagure Orenji Rōdo [editor's note. Orange Road. Akemi Takada is the character designer of the animated version produced by Studio Pierrot] and on this occasion it was decided to release a DVD box and an artbook.

• 5. È in previsione un’altra serie Majokko [ndr. serie che unisce lo shōjo ai temi magici o fantastici]?
  Will it be made another Majokko series [editor's note. shōjo series that combines the magical or fantastic themes]?

Mi piacerebbe molto cimentarmi in un’altra serie Majokko, mi era stata anche fatta una promessa dieci anni fa in questo senso dal direttore dello Studio Pierrot, tuttavia è difficile da prevedere, è una decisione che non dipende da me.
I’d love to try my hand another Majokko series, it was also promised to me ten years ago from the director of Studio Pierrot, but it is difficult to forecast, it is a decision that does not depend on me.

• 6. Quest’anno è il 25° anniversario di Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami, come è stato riprendere in mano questo lavoro?
  This year is the 25th anniversary of Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami, how was to return to work on it?

Per me non è mai stata un’opera che ho lasciato, in realtà ho sempre lavorato su Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami per numerose attività, quindi non l’ho ripresa, ma semplicemente ho continuato a lavorarci.
It has never been a work that I left, actually i have always worked on Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami for many activities, so I did not return to work, but I have just kept working.

• 7. Yu alla fine ha dei figli. Ha mai pensato di continuare la storia di Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami?
  At the end Yu is a mother. Have you ever thought of continuing the story of Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami?

Sì, ci ho pensato, anche per lo Studio Pierrot è una serie molto importante, ma se una serie ha molto successo e il seguito non ne è all’altezza per lo studio Pierrot sarebbe un duro colpo.
Nonostante questo il 18 ottobre di quest’anno c’è stato un evento su Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami ad Akihabara e al direttore dello Studio Pierrot è stata fatta la stessa domanda e imbarazzato ha detto che sarebbe bello fare un seguito.
Comunque è una cosa incerta e di cui si parla da moltissimi anni, quindi non c’è nulla di sicuro.
Yes, I think that for the Studio Pierrot it is a very important series, but if a series is very successful and the sequel is not equal for the study Pierrot would be a blow.
Despite this on October 18th of this year there was an event about Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami in Akihabara and it was asked to the director of the Studio Pierrot the same question and he embarrassed said that it would be nice to do a sequel.
However it is uncertain and it was spoken of this from many years, but there’s nothing sure.

• 8. Ha mai sentito rivalità con altri autori di successo, come per esempio le Clamp?
  Have you ever heard of successful rivalry with other authors, such as the clamp?

Non mi sarei mai aspettata di raggiungere il successo, specialmente in Europa, tuttavia ringrazio i miei fans che sono sempre molto affezionati sia qui in Italia che nella recente visita in Francia.
Per quanto riguarda la rivalità, non c’è, anche perchè le Clamp hanno uno stile completamente diverso dal mio.
I’ve never expected to succeed, especially in Europe, but I thank my fans who are always very fond here in Italy but also in France in my recent visit.
As for the rivalry, there isn’t any rivalry, because the Clamp have a style completely different from mine.

• 9. Quali sono le sue fonti di ispirazione?
  9. What are your sources of inspiration?

Sicuramente gli anime e i manga che leggevo quando ero piccola, per esempio Tetsuwan Atomu, 鉄人28号 Tetsujin Nijūhachi-gō, Berusaiyu no Bara, Moyashimon, Ace wo Nerae [ndr. Astro Boy, Tetsujin 28-go, Lady Oscar, Storie sull'Agricoltura, Jenny la Tennista].
Surely the anime and manga that I read when I was a child, for example Tetsuwan Atomu, 鉄人28号 Tetsujin Nijūhachi-gō, Berusaiyu no Bara, Moyashimon, Ace wo Nerae [editor's note. Astro Boy, Tetsujin 28-go, The Rose of Versailles, Tales of Agriculture, Aim for the Ace!].

• 10. Nel corso della sua carriera è cambiato molto anche il suo stile, diventando più sinuoso ed allungato. Come avete vissuto lei e i suoi fans questo cambiamento?
  During your career it is also changed your style, becoming more sinuous and elongated. How is your and your fans’ reaction about this change?

In realtà non ho mai abbandonato lo stile manga per quello artistico, sono due stili che uso parallelamente. Mi dispiace sapere che piaccia più uno stile piuttosto che un altro anche perchè in entrambi i casi mi impegno sempre al massimo.
Actually, I’ve never abandoned the manga style because of artistic style, they are two styles that I use in parallel. I am sorry to hear that one style is more appreciated than another because in both cases I am always involved very much.

• 11. Cosa ne pensa dei nuovi metodi di lavorazione per gli anime e della possibilità di illustrare in digitale?
  What do you think about the new ways of working of the anime and the opportunity to make digital illustrations?

Ho notato che negli ultimi anni gli anime hanno un pubblico molto più specifico, mentre prima era più vasto e sinceramente lo preferivo prima, perchè sembra che si stia perdendo qualcosa.
Per quanto riguarda l’arte digitale, 15 anni fa ho iniziato ad usare il Mac ed a sperimentare con il digitale, ma da 5 anni mi sono stancata e sono tornata al metodo tradizionale perchè è molto più bello vedere un disegno fatto a mano che in digitale. Mi capita di stare delle ore ad osservare delle opere fatte a mano, ma non quelle in digitale che risultano più semplici, veloci, meno contemplative.
I have noticed that in recent years, the anime have a more specific audience, whereas before it was broader and frankly I preferred this because it seems that it is missing something.
As far as digital art, I started using the Mac 15 years ago and experimenting digital art, but from 5 years I got tired and went back to the traditional method because it is much better to see a drawing made by hand than by digital. I happen to watch works made by hand for hours, but not the digital ones that are easier, faster, less contemplative.

Ma la nostra fortuna non si era conclusa qui.
Akemi Takada aveva portato, per pochi fortunati, dei gadget e, a colpi di morra cinese, ha giocato con il pubblico.
Laura si è aggiudicata la sesta posizione ed ha potuto scegliere il suo prezioso regalo: un calendario autografato del 2010 con le 12 illustrazioni dei mesi presenti in Girl’s Magic. Laura, che aveva ancora i postumi della febbre, le ha anche stretto la mano, e, tornata al suo posto ha detto “La sua mano calda mi ha trasmesso tepore e mi ha guarita!!!”.

But our luck was not ended here.
Akemi Takada brought merchandise for some lucky fans and she played rock-paper-scissors with the public.
Laura gained the sixth position and chose a precious gift: an autographed calendar of 2010 with the 12 illustrations of the months in Girl’s Magic. Laura, who still had the after-effects of the temperature, also shooke her hands, and then she said “Her warm hand gave me warmth and healed me!!!”.
