I return to talk about the life of the fascinating artist Yayoi Kusama, if you missed the first part I suggest you first read the previous article.

In these years she experiments with sculpture, creating soft sculptures focusing on sexuality, as Accumulation (1961-1962), Sex Obsession (1962-1964) and Compulsion Furniture (1964). In this case the repetition of the net changes in the repetition of the phallus and then in the repetition of dots, which will become her “trademark”, merging with her artistic personality.

In these years she participates in collective exhibitions which allow her to meet the key people in the artistic field like the Nul group, the Zero group, Yves Klein, Pietro Manzoni and Lucio Fontana, who will become his greatest supporter, he financially helps her to participate in exhibitions and gives her a room as a studio in friendly relationship that will continue until his death in 1968.
He finances her with $600 for the project Narcissus Garden, presented at the Biennale di Venezia in 1966, where she improvises an installation on the outside where on a carpet of artificial grass were put 1500 reflective spheres in a highly sensational sight: the spheres reflects the sky, the earth, the grass, and the movement itself of the visitors, but this installation draws attention to itself for the provocation carried out by Kusama which begin selling to the public, until she is stopped by the organizers, the reflective spheres at cost 1200 lire (0,60€) each. Kusama in the temple of art and history arouses a polemic against the system of the contemporary art market, the business culture that led to the exemplification and serial processes.

As from 1967, she demonstrates to be a precursor again, by organizing performances mainly in New York, called Happening, which have a political and social meaning, in which participants wear clothes made from Kusama herself (even in 1969 she opens her own boutique), or demonstrate with the naked bodies painted with the characteristic pattern of the artist.
In 1968 she also makes a film as director and actress, Kusama’s Self-Obliteration.

In 1977 she self-recludes in the Tokyo mental institution, establishing her studio nearby, and she still lives there, calling the clinic “home”.

In 1993 at the Biennale di Venezia her istallation is very successful, a room covered with mirrors in which there are pumpkins sheped sculptures, as in an artificial garden that is repeated endlessly. The pumpkin becomes another of her alter ego, as the Infinity Net
In the field of sculpture she makes also giant flowers with bright and vivid colors, with one eye open as a central hub, which exude humor, sensuality, anxiety, but certainly also reflect the spiritual aura, always present in the works of Yayoi Kusama, an inner spirituality of the artist, but also absolute which is perceived by the viewer that makes a bond between the audience and the work itself.

Yayoi Kusama - The Passing of Winter, 2005

In recent environmental works it’s possible to feel the spirituality powerfully: in “Aftermath Of Obliteration of Eternity” in 2009, mirrors cover all the room, LEDs hang from the ceiling and light up and go off at intervals, reflecting endlessly in the mirrors and recreating a infinite scenario suspended between dream and reality, between the life and the unknown. In “The Passing of Winter”, 2005, the visitor does not enter into the installation and another dimension such as “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity”, but it lean out, like off the window to the infinite, of which can have a taste, without be completely part of it.
In these works Kusama embodies a world, brings to life an imaginative world that the canvas have evoked, and give off a strong spiritual component.
In 2006 a project has started, it would be ended in 2009 on the occasion of her eightieth birthday: the objective was to make a documentary to follow the stages of the creative genius of Yayoi Kusama also to contribute to her arevaluation to the United States, where her contributions of the 60s have been misunderstood. Hope that the documentary comes out soon, let’s enjoy the trailer.

Yayoi Kusama researches infinity, during her long exploration in the art and in her inner world she constantly reinvents herself and says that three lives would not suffice to express everything she would.

“Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity”, consiglio a tutti di entrare.
