Sorelle Mirabal / Mirabal Sisters

Oggi 25 novembre è “la Giornata Internazionale per l’Eliminazione della Violenza contro le Donne”, scelta dall’ONU in memoria della data dell’assassinio delle tre Sorelle Mirabal, Patria, Minerva e Maria Teresa, attiviste politiche, soprannominate “le Farfalle (Las Mariposas in spagnolo)”, assieme ai loro mariti contro il regime di Rafael Leónidas Trujillo nella Repubblica Dominicana.
Nel 1960 mentre tornavano dal carcere dove avevano fatto visita ai loro mariti vennero torturate, massacrate e strangolate da agenti del Servizio Militare di Intelligence, su ordine di Trujillo, che cercarono di simulare un incidente.
Da questo omicidio iniziò una rivolta che sei mesi dopo portò all’assassinio di Trujillo stesso.
Le Sorelle Mirabal sono diventate un simbolo di dignità, libertà e rispetto dei diritti umani ed ispirano milioni di persone in tutto il mondo.

Today November 25 is “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”, chosen by the UN to commemorate the date of the the three Mirabal sisters‘ (Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa) murder, political activists, known as ”The Butterflies (Las Mariposas in spanish)”, along with their husbands, against the regime of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.
In 1960 on their way to return from prison where they visited their husbands they were tortured, massacred and strangled by the Military Intelligence Service agents, on Trujillo order, who tried to simulate an accident.
After this murder it began a revolt that led the assassination of Trujillo himself.
The Mirabal sisters have become a symbol of dignity, freedom and respect for human rights and inspire millions of people around the world.

Molte associazioni hanno contribuito a diffondere un pensiero di pace ed uguaglianza e hanno svolto iniziative che hanno portato aiuto e sensibilizzato.

• Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women:
  “Say NO” (Diciamo no) è una campagna globale iniziata nel 2009 presentata da UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women, un fondo ONU che opera per i diritti delle donne e l’emancipazione femminile dal 1979).
  La 1° fase della campagna è terminata il 25 novembre de 2008, nella 2° fase della campagna in corso si vuole sensibilizzare i governi del mondo a considerare questo problema come una priorità.
  Tutti noi possiamo aderire, basta andare sul sito ufficiale e dire no!
• Amnesty International:
  Nella campagna “Mai più violenza sulle donne”, lanciata nel 2004, chiede ai governi, alle organizzazioni e ai privati cittadini di impegnarsi pubblicamente per rendere i diritti umani una realtà per tutte le donne.
• Center for Women’s Global Leadership:
  19° edizione dei 16 Giorni di Attivismo contro la Violenza di Genere (25 Novembre - 10 Dicembre), che con il motto “We CAN End Violence Against Women!” (Possiamo Fermare la Violenza contro le Donne) promuove molte iniziative e comprende nel suo lasso di tempo altri giorni importanti come il 29 novembre, “International Women Human Rights Defenders Day” (Giornata Internazionale per la Difesa dei Diritti Umani delle Donne), il 1 dicembre, “World AIDS Day” (Giornata Mondiale per la Lotta all’AIDS) e il 6 dicembre l’anniversario del Massacro di Montreal.

Many associations have helped to spread a thought of peace and equality, and undertook initiatives that have brought aid and awareness.

• Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women:
  “Say NO” is a global campaign initiated in 2009 by UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women, a UN fund that acts for women’s rights and emancipation of women since 1979).
  The 1st phase of the campaign ended on November 25, 2008, and in the 2nd phase of the current year the objective is to raise awareness among governments of the world to recognize this problem as a priority.
  All of us can join, just go on the official website and say no!
• Amnesty International:
  In the campaign “Stop violence against women”, began in 2004, calls on governments, organizations and individuals to make a public involvement to make human rights a reality for all women.
• Center for Women’s Global Leadership:
  19th edition of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (November 25 - December 10), which with the motto “We Can End Violence Against Women!” promotes many initiatives and in its duration includes other important days like November 29, “International Women Human Rights Defenders Day”, December 1, “World AIDS Day”, and December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.
