Non Solo Kawaii

Shiori Matsumoto è una pittrice giapponese che crea atmosfere oniriche, malinconiche e criptiche ispirandosi al surrealismo, al simbolismo, alle favole dei fratelli Grimm e alle sottoculture giapponesi, come il kawaii per esempio.

Shiori Matsumoto is a japanese painter who creates dreamlike, melancholy and cryptic atmospheres drawing her inspiration from surrealism, symbolism, Grimm’s fairy tales and Japanese subculture, as kawaii for example.

Le cose che maggiormente mi affascinano dei suoi lavori sono l’aura che riesce a creare e il contatto e la curiosità che infonde in chi sta osservando il quadro, nonstante il significato non sempre sia perfettamente chiaro.
I suoi soggetti preferiti sono delle ragazze adolescenti dagli occhi magnetici, profondi ed espressivi anche quando sembrano non pensare a nulla. Sembrano delle donne mature in corpi troppo acerbi.

The things that fascinate me most in her paintings are the aura that she creates and the contacts and the curiosity that she infuses with whom is watching her paintings, even if the meaning is often obscure.
Her favourite subjects are teenager girls with magnetic, deep and expressive eyes also when they seem to not think anything. They seem mature woman inside immature bodies.

• 1. Quando hai scoperto il tuo amore per la pittura?
  1. When did you find out your passion for painting?

Quando ero bambina mio papà aveva tanti libri d’arte ed ero molto interessata.
Mi piacevano i mondi fantastici e quando ero adolescente imitavo i disegni degli anime e dei fumetti. 

The time of a child, my father were having a lot of books about art, and I was interested in art.
I liked the world of fantasy, and the time of the teens imitated the anime and the picture of comics.

• 2. Usi olio, acrilico e dipingi su legno e tela, qual è la tua tecnica preferita?
  2. You use oil, acrylic and paint on wood and canvas, what is your favourite technique?

La mia preferita è olio su tela.
Mi piace la velocità con cui si asciuga la pittura, la sensazione di trasparenza e la flessibilità della tela.

My favorite is oil on canvas.
I am liking speed of drying of paints and a transparent feeling, flexibility of a canvas.

• 3. Prima di toccare i pennelli, qual è il processo preparatorio?
  3. Before using paintbrushes, what is the preparatory process?

Dipingo la tela d’argento chiaro con una spatola.
La tela risulta così piatta e la resa dei colori migliora.

I paint a canvas with silver white with a knife.
A canvas becomes flatness, and color development improves.

• 4. I tuoi lavori sono molto articolati, come nasce l’idea di un nuovo quadro?
  4. Your works are very elaborate, how does idea of a new painting born?

Immagino in modo grezzo l’idea principale e colleziono i documenti necessari per disegnare.
Mentre ricerco la documentazione l’idea cambia, ma i contenuti del quadro diventano precisi.

I image main roughly and collect necessary documents in order to draw it.
While I am collecting documents, an idea changes, but a concrete painting becomes precise contents.

• 5. Perchè prediligi come soggetto giovani adolescenti?
  5. Why do you prefer teenager girls as subject?

L’esistenza delle fanciulle è attraente nell’esprimere una delicata nostalgia.
Esprimono elementi come la vanità, la fragilità, la crudeltà con grazia e bellezza allo stesso tempo.
Le sento come dei miei alter ego, e dentro di me non sono ancora pronte a maturare.

The girl is existence to be attractive to express delicate nostalgia.
They express the elements which I like such as vanity or fragility cruelty with prettiness and beauty simultaneously.
I feel it so that they are my other self, and it may be for my inside not to be maturing as an adult yet.

• 6. Nei tuoi dipinti traspare un significato profondo: vorresti che le persone cercassero di comprendere le tue intenzioni originali o che interpretassero liberamente la tua opera secondo il loro vissuto e la loro sensibilità?
  6. In your painting there always is a deep meaning: wolud you like that people try to understand your original intention or that people interpret your work of art freely according to their background and sensitivity?

Credo che dovrei lasciare un quadro alla libera interpretazione di chi lo guarda.
Perchè mentre dipingo il quadro sembra avere più di una interpretazione e non sono preparata ad una sola risposta.

I think that I should leave a painting to free interpretation of a person watching it.
Because I am drawing it as the picture that there seems to be some interpretation, I am not preparing only one answer.

• 7. In molti dipinti compare la maschera, cosa significa questo soggetto per te?
  7. In many paintings there is a mask, what does this subject mean for you?

La maschera è un accessorio che suscita l’immagine del mistero.
Nasconde il vero se stesso e rende oscure le persone, ma la decorazione elegante attrae.

A mask is accessories rousing the image that is mysterious.
It hides true self and directs a doubtful person, but the graceful decoration is attractive.

• 8. Qual è stata la cosa più bella che ti hanno detto riguardo al tuo lavoro di illustratrice?
  8. What is the beautiful thing that somebody told you about your art?

La raffigurazione degli occhi sembra essere bellissima nei miei quadri.
Description of the eyes seems to be beautiful in my paintings.

• 9. Immagino che sia impossibile chiederti qual è il quadro preferito che hai dipinto, ma qual è quello a cui tieni di più?
  9. I imagine that is impossible to ask you what your favourite painting is, but what is the painting, which you made, that is emotionally more important for you?

“Looking for my bird” e “Lost children” sono i miei preferiti.
Gli alti e bassi della vita quotidiana sono legati al quadro in questo caso.
Ho perso di vista una cosa importante, cerco e pretendo un ideale e vago in un labirinto senza un’uscita.
Esprimo i miei sentimenti personali  piuttosto che un tema sociale, ma sembra che faccia dell’ironia sulla società.

“Looking for mu bird” and “Lost children” are my favorites.
The twists and turns that I feel in daily life are bound in a picture there.
I lose sight of an important thing and I look for an ideal and demand it and wander in a labyrinth without an exit…..
I express personal narrow feelings than a social theme, but seem to feel irony for society by a person.

• 10. Domanda sul futuro: quali sono i tuoi nuovi progetti? Le tue bambine diventeranno grandi?
  10. Question about the future: what are your new projects? Will your teeager girls grow up?

I miei progetti non sono ancora pianificati.
Perchè la galleria che vende i miei quadri ha chiuso.
Sto organizzando delle partecipazioni a delle esibizioni di gruppo in Giappone e nei Paesi Bassi.

My concrete new projects is still unsettled.
Because a gallery of my art sales has closed.
So far I am planning participation to some group exhibitions in Japan and the Netherlands.
