Annapaola Rapacciuolo (1978 - Napoli, Italia) è la designer e creatrice del marchio di bijoux Le Chou Chou. Gioielli kawaii interamente fatti a mano che hanno come materiale base le paste sintetiche, modellate ad immagine di golosi dolcetti dai colori appetitosi e felici animaletti dallo sguardo vivace.
Biscotti e torte, con tanto di piattino e posate, impreziositi da cristalli Svarowski, fanno parte della collezione Patisserie Deluxe, diventando ornamenti per ciondoli, spille, orecchini e collane. Nella collezione Dandy Colletion è invece il pizzo a rendere fashion questi originali accessori.
Gioielli golosi che, oltre a far venire l’acquolina in bocca, danno il buon umore.
Annapaola Rapacciuolo (1978 - Naples, Italy) is the designer and creator of the jewellery brand Le Chou Chou. Kawaii jewellery entirely handmade that have as base material polymer clay, molded as greedy candy tasty-looking and lively and happy pets.
Biscuits and cakes, with saucer and cutlery, embellished with Svarowski crystals, are part of the collection Patisserie Deluxe, becoming ornaments for pendants, brooches, earrings and necklaces. The line Dandy Colletion is instead the lace which makes fashion these original accessories.
Greedy jewellery that makes mouth-watering and makes feel happy.

• 1. Hai dato un nome dal suono veramente kawaii al tuo marchio, cosa significa Le Chou Chou? C’è un motivo per cui utilizzi termini francesi per dare nomi ai tuoi bijoux?
  1. Your brand has a really kawaii sound, what does Le Chou Chou mean? Is there is a reason for using French terms for naming your jewelry?

Con il nome “ciù ciù” si indicano nel napoletano alcuni tipi di caramelle gommose, sul genere di quelle coloratissime che si vendono alle feste di paese; ma è anche un vezzeggiativo per i bambini o per indicare una persona particolarmente carina e dolce. Questa parola deriva da “chou”, che in francese significa “cavoletto” ed è usato come vezzeggiativo nella stessa accezione del termine partenopeo a cui ha dato origine. Ho anteposto l’articolo per rendere il nome più originale e dargli un ironico “tocco di classe”, e per lo stesso motivo ho voluto da quest’anno utilizzare i nomi in francese: il suono chic e un po’ altisonante contrasta con l’informalità delle mie creazioni.
“Ciù ciù” refers to the Neapolitan name of certain types of gummy candy, the kind of colorful ones that are sold at village fetes, but it is also a pet name of the children or to indicate a particularly nice and sweet person. This word comes from “chou”, which in French means “sprout” and is used as a pet name in the same sense of the Neapolitan word which gave rise to. I put before the article to make the name more original and to give an ironic “touch of class”, and for the same reason I wanted to begin to use the French names from this year: the chic and a little resounding sound contrasts with the informality of my creations.

• 2. Cosa ti spinge a creare gioielli? Cosa cerchi di comunicare attraverso di essi?
  2. What do you push to create jewelry? What do you try to communicate through them?

Sono sempre stata una persona con problemi… logistici: questo mi ha portato a rendere “tascabile” e ridotto all’essenziale tutto ciò che posseggo. I gioielli sono una delle più piccole (in termini di dimensioni ovviamente) forme d’arte esistenti. Ho studiato oreficeria e design presso il più grande centro orafo sud Italia (il Tarì di Marcianise), ma il mio primo incontro con questo mondo così affascinante è stato da bambina, durante una mostra archeologica in cui vidi esposti i gioielli ritrovati sotto le ceneri del Vesuvio. Erano sopravvissuti non solo alle persone, ma anche alla maggior parte delle opere d’arte e delle costruzioni: avendo un grande valore economico e simbolico e dimensioni ridotte, erano i principali oggetti che tutti avevano preso con sè durante la fuga.
Un gioiello per me è “arte portatile”.
I’ve always been a person with logistical… problems: this pushes me to make “pocket” and reduced to essentials all I have. Jewels are one of the smallest (in terms of size of course) existent art forms. I studied jewelry design at the largest jewelry center in southern Italy (the Tarì of Marcianise), but my first encounter with this world so fascinating was when i was a child during an archaeological exhibition in which I saw the jewels found under the ashes of Vesuvius. They live through not only people but also the most of the works of art and buildings: having a great symbolic and economic value and small size, they were the principal objects that all the people took while were fleeing.
A jewel for me is “portable art”.

• 3. Da cosa trai l’ispirazione per creare un nuovo gioiello?
  3. What is your source of inspiration for a new jewel?

L’ispirazione può giungere da qualsiasi cosa: un colore, una parola, un oggetto, una macchia…e potrei proseguire all’infinito! Ascolto moltissimo i suggerimenti dei miei clienti, dei miei amici e delle persone di cui ammiro il senso estetico.
Inspiration can come from anything: a color, a word, an object, a spot… and I could go on forever! I listen very much to the suggestions of my customers, my friends and people who I admire their aesthetic sense.

• 4. Quali sono i tuoi “attrezzi del mestiere”? Come nasce un bijou Le Chou Chou?
  4. What are your “tools of the trade”? How is a bijou Le Chou Chou born?

I miei bijoux nascono quasi tutti di notte, il mio momento più produttivo.
La maggior parte dei miei attrezzi è autoprodotta o riciclata: credo che per un creativo, così come non esiste ancora ciò che desidera creare, talvolta non esista nemmeno l’utensile adatto, il che lo induce a fabbricarlo da solo. È sorprendente vedere quanti degli oggetti che usiamo e spesso buttiamo via possano essere indispensabili per chi crea.
Dato che in questo periodo ho spazi e risorse molto limitati, ed ho dovuto mettere da parte per ora la lavorazione dei metalli che richiede spazio e attrezzature costose, il riciclaggio e l’arte di arrangiarsi sono i miei strumenti più importanti!
My jewels are born almost always during the night, the most productive moment for me.
Most of my tools are self-produced or recycled: I believe that for the creatives, as there isn’t still what they want to create, sometimes there isn’t also the right tool, and it’s necessary to produce it by themselves. It’s amazing how many objects we use and often throw away can be indispensable for those who create.
Since in this period I have very limited space and resources, and I had to put aside for now the metal processing, which requires expensive equipment and space, recycling and the art of getting along are my most important tools!

• 5. Da molti il fimo è visto come una materiale poco nobile che spesso viene identificato con la creazione di oggettini e accessori amatoriali. Qual è la differenza tra chi lo usa in modo professionale e chi no?
  5. A lot of people think that the fimo isn’t a very noble material which is often identified with the creation of trinkets and amateur accessories. What is the difference between someone who uses it in a professional way and who not?

La risposta non è semplicissima: è un materiale meno usato e più costoso, ad esempio, delle tempere per dipingere, eppure nessuno si sognerebbe di definire amatoriale un quadro esclusivamente perchè realizzato con le tempere. Credo che tale “interpretazione” provenga dal boom dell’utilizzo di questo materiale che c’è stato negli ultimi anni, dovuta alla facilità d’uso e di reperimento del prodotto.
Ho inziato ad usare le paste sintetiche, (il Fimo è solo una delle innumerevoli marche e tipologie presenti sul mercato), quando trovarne un pezzo era un’impresa ardua: la mia esperienza supera ormai i quindici anni.
Personalmente ritengo che tutti possano creare un “oggettino” ma non tutti possano creare un oggetto esteticamente gradevole, resistente al tempo e all’usura al massimo di quanto il materiale lo consente e ben eseguito (più di una volta mi è stato riferito che una mia creazione ha resistito ad un’accidentale centrifuga in lavatrice).
Penso che l’esigenza di esprimersi creando sia una forza che sfida ogni ostacolo: qualsiasi idea e qualsiasi materiale, indipendentemente dal suo valore in termini economici, diventa arte tra le mani di un vero artista.
Osservando artisti esperti nell’uso delle paste sintetiche come la celebre Donna Kato, posso dirvi che a mio parere chi lavora questi materiali in modo professionale ha sviluppato una tecnica e uno stile personale nel corso del tempo, si esercita quasi quotidianamente, anche solo per piacere personale ma con passione e impegno i cui risultati sono evidenti. È dotato di originalità e creatività, non riproduce certo per la vendita soggetti altrui o protetti da copyright e, se decide di commerciare i propri lavori, non li svende ritenendoli “oggettini” ma sa valutarli con un certo criterio.
Basta fare una ricerca veloce nel web per scoprire creazioni sorprendenti e di difficilissima esecuzione, le quali richiedono ore di progettazione e sperimentazioni e non possono essere definite altrimenti che Arte.
In sintesi, potrei dirvi scherzosamente che chi non sa fare questa distinzione forse semplicemente non è capace di utilizzare un motore di ricerca… o non ne ha voglia.
The answer is simple: it is a material that is less used and more expensive, for example, then tempera to paint, but no one would say that a painting is amateur only because is made by tempera. I believe that such “interpretation” comes from the boom in the use of this material in recent years, due to the easiness of the use and the availability of the product.
I began to use the polymer clay, (Fimo is just one of many brands and available types), when it was hard to find it: my experience is now more than fifteen years.
I personally believe that everyone can create a “knick” but not everyone can create an object aesthetically pleasing, time-resistant and wear-resistant, the best performances that this material permit, and well executed (more than once it was told that my creation stood an accidental spin-drier).
I think that the need to express themselves is a strenght that clears every hurdle: any idea and any material, regardless of its economic value, become art in the hands of a true artist.
Looking at artists skilled in the use of polymer clay such as the famous Donna Kato, I can tell you that I believe that people who work these materials in a professional way have developed a technique and personal style over time, they have been exercising almost daily, even just for pleasure but with passion and commitment and the results are clear. They are original and creative, don’t make subjects of others or copyrighted for selling and, if they decide to trade their work, not undercut them like “knicks” but they value them with a certain criterion.
Just do a quick search on the web to find amazing and hard-execution creations, which require hours of design and testing, and can not be described otherwise than Art.
In summary, I jokingly say that those who can not make this distinction may simply not be able to use a search engine … or do not want.

• 6. La tua nuova collezione è impreziosita da cristalli Swarovski e perle, come mai questa scelta?
  6. Your new collection is embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls, why this choice?

La risposta a questa domanda è in parte compresa in quella precedente: mostrando come materiali universalmente definiti pregiati si sposino perfettamente con le paste polimeriche, il mio scopo è dimostrare l’erroneità della definizione di “materiale povero” attribuita a queste ultime.
The answer to this question is partly included in the previous one: to show how materials universally defined valuable match perfectly with the polymer clay, my aim is to demonstrate the fallacy of the definition of “poor material” attributed to it.

• 7. Qual è l’oggetto che hai realizzato che ha avuto più successo o al quale sei più affezionata?
  7. What is the object that you realized that had most success or that you’re most fond of?

Sicuramente il porcellino Pinky Pig, che infatti è diventato la mia “mascotte”!

• 8. Hai mai fatto delle collaborazioni con altri artisti? Ci sono degli artisti in particolare con cui ti piacerebbe lavorare in futuro?
  8. Have you ever done collaborations with other artists? Are there some artists in particular with whom you’d like to work in the future?

La mia prima collaborazione risale a molti anni fa, quando un’allieva di un istituto di moda vide dei miei anelli intrecciati in rame e quarzo e immaginò un abito interamente circondato, ed in parte sorretto, da una struttura ispirata ad essi che progettammo insieme, e poi realizzai per lei con il finanziamento della sua scuola; fu fatto sfilare al Teatro Politeama di Napoli, discesa di scale incluse senza alcun intoppo; un’impresa non facile che ebbe successo perchè la struttura metallica era stata realizzata su un manichino, ma successivamente plasmata sul corpo della modella, in modo da adattarsi perfettamente.
Quest’anno ho avuto il piacere di conoscere attraverso il web la stilista Barbara Maiocchi, creatrice del brand B. Stylish e persona davvero adorabile: ho collaborato con due delle mie creazioni ad una delle pagine del suo catalogo invernale, ispirato alle “Gossip Girls”. Due anelli in resina polimerica, ceramica e cristalli Swarovski completano l’atmosfera “golosa” e trasgressiva al centro della quale si colloca il modello “Scarlett”.
Un’artista con la quale mi piacerebbe moltissimo collaborare è Clio Zammatteo, abilissima make-up artist e comunicatrice, già vostra ospite qualche tempo fa.
My first collaboration dates back to many years ago when a student of a fashion institute saw my rings woven by copper and quartz, and she imagined a dress entirely surrounded, and partially supported by a structure inspired by them that we planned together, and then I realized for her with the financial support of her school; it was modeled on the runway at the Politeama Theatre of Naples, including descent of stairs without a hitch; It wasn’t easy and it was a success because the metal structure was built on a dummy, but later was mold on the body of a model, to fit perfectly.
This year I had the pleasure of knowing, thanks to the web, the designer Barbara Maiocchi, creator of the brand B. Stylish and very lovable person: I have worked with two of my creations to one of pages of her winter catalog, inspired by “Gossip Girls”. Two rings in polymer resin, ceramic and Swarovski crystals complete the “greedy” and transgressive atmosphere in the center of which lies the model “Scarlett”.
An artist with whom I would love to collaborate is Clio Zammatteo, skilful make-up artist and communicator, your guest some time ago.

• 9. La tua presenza su molti social network (Flickr, Facebook e Twitter), oltre ad essere un metodo di autopromozione, è anche un modo per essere più vicina a persone che sono interessate a quello che fai. Perchè hai scelto di avere un dialogo con i tuoi fan o con chi ha gusti in comune con te?
  9. Your presence on many social network (Flickr, Facebook and Twitter), as well as being a method of self-promotion, is also a way to be closer to people who are interested in what you do. Why did you choose to have a dialogue with your fans or those who have interests in common with you?

Forse è banale a dirsi ma è la realtà: per crescere il dialogo è indispensabile, ed il web è la nuova piazza, la nuova vetrina, il nuovo luogo d’incontro collettivo per chi vuole condividere passioni ed interessi. È il miglior modo per trovare e farsi trovare da chi ha bisogno di informazioni e servizi, e più si è presenti più sono alte le possibilità di stabilire dei contatti. Essere presenti però non vuol dire essere invadenti, altrimenti il dialogo si trasforma in un fastidioso monologo.
Maybe it’s trite to say but it’s the reality: to grow the dialogue is indispensable, and the web is the new means, the new showroom, the new collective meeting place for those who want to share passions and interests. It’s the best way to find and be found by those who need information and services, the more you are present the higher is the possibility to establish contacts. Be present, however, does not mean being pushy, otherwise the dialogue turns into an annoying monologue.

• 10. La tua città natale è Napoli, ma ora vivi a Bologna. Pensi che il Sud offra meno opportunità ai giovani artisti?
  10. Your hometown is Naples, but now you live in Bologna. Do you think that the South offers fewer opportunities for young artists?

Il sud offre meno opportunità a chiunque in qualunque settore. La più grossa discriminante è molto probabilmente la ancor minore disponibilità di fondi pubblici e privati rispetto al nord, ma in ogni caso nel nostro paese l’Arte è davvero svalutata ed un inestimabile patrimonio artistico, che potrebbe essere la nostra maggiore risorsa e dare lavoro a tanti giovani dotati di talento, giace in moltissimi casi abbandonato a se stesso e dimenticato.
The south offers fewer opportunities to anyone in any field. The biggest discriminating thing is most probably the lower availability of public and private funds than the north, but in all cases in our country the Art is really devalued and a priceless artistic heritage, which could be our greatest resource and provide employment many young talented, in many cases is left to itself and forgotten.

• 11. Artista, artigiana, web designer, molte professioni l’una diversa dall’altra. Cosa ti ha spinto ad imparare tutte queste professioni? E cosa vorresti fare da grande?
  11. Artist, craftsmen, web designer, many different professions. What have pushed you to learn all these professions? And what would you do when you grow up?

Vi dirò di più: scrivo anche poesie e racconti, e non me la cavo male, mi dicono… ho dovuto smettere per pura mancanza di tempo! Credo che l’eclettismo sia il tratto distintivo di chi ha davvero dentro di sè qualcosa da esprimere e cerca continuamente nuovi mezzi da utilizzare per dare voce alla propria immaginazione.
Da grande, credo che continuerò sempre a creare, con qualsiasi mezzo e materiale che sentirò affine. Ho tante idee di natura molto eterogenea che vorrei realizzare in futuro!
I will say more: I write poems and stories, and I came off well, itis said … I had to quit out for sheer lack of time! I think that eclecticism is the hallmark of someone who really has inside something to express and constantly seeks new means to give voice to own imagination.
When i grow up, I think that i will always continue to create, by any means and materials that i feel similar. I have so many different ideas that i would like to make I want to make in the future!
