Dopo il fantastico Hell Babies, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 2001 e che ha già visto la sua terza riedizione, nel marzo 2009 Junko Mizuno torna a stupirci ed affascinarci con la sua ultima raccolta di illustrazioni, realizzate nel 2007 e nel 2008, dal nome Flare. Non a caso il termine inglese “flare” si traduce in italiano con “fiammata”: è un’esplosione di colori, donnine e strane creature, in una strabiliante fusione tra horror, sensualità e kawaii.

After the fantastic Hell Babies, published for the first time in 2001 and edited already for the third time, in March 2009 Junko Mizuno comes back to amaze and fascinate us with her latest collection of illustrations, created in 2007 and 2008, named Flare. It’s not a case the title “flare”, because it is an explosion of colours, women, and strange creatures in a stunning fusion of horror, sensuality and kawaii.

Tra le sue nuove illustrazioni troviamo ragazze con le corna che sembrano creature mitologiche, in compagnia del nuovo character Heart Goblin: un cuore antropomorfo che Junko Mizuno ha trasposto anche in peluche.

Among her new illustrations there are girls with horns who seem mythical creatures in the company of a new character Heart Goblin: an anthropomorphic heart of which there is also a plush.

Le country pin-up dai capelli rossi, con i loro abitini sexy in perfetto stile “campagnola bella”, si occupano dei lavori con dolci sorrisi e pose provocanti.

The red-haired country pin-up, with their sexy dresses with “beautiful countrygirl” style, they take care of the country business with sweet smiles and provocative poses.

La serie di illustrazioni Tender Succubus ritrae le ossessioni delle fanciulle gothic-dark: bestie, rane, hamburger e teschi.

Tender Succubus series of illustrations show obsessions of gothic-dark girls: animals, frogs, hamburgers and skulls.

L’anatomia degli animali vista in modo kawaii. Un cane azzurro, un gatto rosso, un coniglio rosa, un orso viola e un’ape gialla, i cui corpi sono stati sezionati per mostare come sono fatti dentro mentre stanno facendo i loro bisognini.

The anatomy of animals is very kawaii. A blue dog, a red cat, a pink rabbit, a purple bear and a yellow bee, whose bodies were dissected to show how they are made inside while they are making cute pooh.

Tutte le bambine giocano a fare la mamma, ma le bimbe rappresentate da Junko Mizuno sono particolari anche in questo. In Playing Mother delle bambine kawaii e colorate, fanno da mamma ad esseri marini. Anche un granchio, un polipo, una razza ed un pesciolino hanno bisogno di cure!

All the girls play at make the mum, but the girls represented by Junko Mizuno are special even in this. In Playing Mother kawaii and colourful girls make the mum with marine creatures. Even a crab, an octopus, a race and a little fish need care!

Nel libro sono incluse anche le illustrazioni di The Kappa Show, dedicate ai verdi spiritelli giapponesi che abitano stagni, laghi e fiumi. Junko Mizuno li ha rappresentati sia in versione baby, che adulta.

The book also includes illustrations of The Kappa Show, dedicated to Japanese green sprites that inhabit ponds, lakes and rivers. Junko Mizuno represented them as babies and adults.

Con Pop Art Playmates 2008 vediamo una carrellata di signorine sexy vestite di veli che lasciano intravedere tutto, sono giovani e adulte, con e senza prole, perchè tutte le donne sanno essere sensuali.

In Pop Art Playmates 2008 we see some sexy ladies dressed with veils, who glimpse everything, they are young and adults, with and without children, because all women know how to be sensual.

Abbiamo acquistato Flare direttamente dal sito ufficiale dell’editore Editions Treville al prezzo di JPY 3,780, che con spese di spedizione e relativa dogana, il totale è ammontato a 45,00€. Ma non era un Flare qualunque: tutte le copie acquistate dalla casa editrice sono autografate da Junko Mizuno!
Al loro arrivo, i volumi erano ben imballati, ognuno inserito in una bustina di plastica trasparente, con allegate alcune pagine di Hell Babies che sono state per un noi un gradito omaggio.

We bought Flare directly from the official website of the publisher Editions Treville at a price of JPY 3.780, the total amounted to € 45.00 with shipping cost and customs duty. All copies purchased from the publisher are autographed by Junko Mizuno!
When books arrived, the volumes were well packaged, each volume were placed in a transparent plastic bag with attached several pages of Hell Babies as a cute gift.

Tutto ciò che crea Junko Mizuno mi attira e mi conquista.
Appena ho visto nella rete il suo nuovo libro mi sono detta che doveva essere mio. Essendo difficile reperire sul territorio italiano le sue creazioni, ci si può sbizzarrire in acquisti combinati con le amiche su internet. Quando abbiamo aperto il pacco eravamo in fibrillazione e quando abbiamo visto l’autografo ci è venuto un mancamento: non è un libro, è un tesoro! Da lì ci venuta la voglia di condividere con voi questo libro di meraviglie ed abbiamo realizzato il video.
Questo secondo volume di illustrazioni di Junko Mizuno è veramente bello ed affascinante e contiene tavole fantastiche e sempre originali. La confezione esterna, seppur molto fine con i toni turchese ed oro, è però meno particolare di quella plasticosa e glitterata del suo primo libro Hell Babies.
Da avere.

Everything that creates Junko Mizuno attracts me and conquer me.
As soon as I saw her new artbook on online shops i thought that i have to buy it. It’s difficult to find her creations in Italy, but it’s possible to make shopping on the Internet with my friends all together. When we opened the package we were excited and when we saw the autograph we felt faint: it wasn’t a book but a treasure! For this reason we decided to share with you this book of wonders and we made a video.
This second volume of illustrations by Junko Mizuno is really nice and charming and has great tables and always original. The cover, even if is very fine and coloured with turquoise and gold tones, is less particular than plastic and glittering cover of her first book, Hell Babies.

Vista la buonissima qualità di contenuti e di impaginazione del primo artbook di Junko Mizuno, Hell Babies, avevo un’aspettativa molto alta per Flare. Non troviamo una copertina morbida e plasticosa in questo caso, ma una semplice cover rigida, stupisce invece la grafica interna che nonostante la pulizia è curata nei minimi dettagli: gli angoli delle pagine sono arrotondati, i titoli delle opere hanno le maiuscole ricche e i colori che si abbinano perfettamente all’illustrazione corrispondente, le immagini sono quasi sempre a tutta pagina.
Insomma Flare è un ottimo prodotto e le illustrazioni mi sembrano molto più spinte e “crudeli” rispetto ad Hell Babies. Le mie preferite sono le serie delle dolcissime piccole Kappa e delle sensuali e misteriose donne Kappa, The Kappa Show, le sei Pop Art Playmates da pagina 96 (ne potete vedere due in questo articolo un po’ più su)  e le illustrazioni delle pin-up cattive dallo sfondo color seppia (di cui fa parte “Menstruation” poco più su).

The very good quality content and layout of the first artbook of Junko Mizuno, Hell Babies, make me have a very high expectation for Flare. We don’t find a soft and plastic cover in this case, but a simple hard cover, on the contrary it surprises me that the graphic inside is very clear but every detail was studied: pages have rounded corners, titles of the pieces of works have rich capital letters with colours that perfectly match with the corresponding illustration, images are almost always full page.
In short, Flare is a great product and the illustrations seem much more steamy and “cruel” than Hell Babies. My favorites are the series of small sweet Kappa and of the sensual and mysterious Kappa women, The Kappa Show, the six Pop Art Playmates from page 96 (you can see two of them up in this article) and illustrations of bad pin-ups with a sepia background (one of them is “Menstruation” just above).
