Non Solo Kawaii

“Pink Box, Inside Japan’s Sex Club”, è un libro documentario fotografico attraverso l’industra del sesso giapponese, la seconda più importante della nazione in termini di fatturato l’anno.

“Pink Box Inside Japan’s Sex Clubs” is a photographic documentary book through the Japanese sex industry, the second largest in the nation in terms of turnover per year.

L’autrice del libro è Joan Sinclair, statunitense, e ha covato questo libro per 10 anni, prima di vederne la pubblicazione; nel 1995 si trovava a Tokyo e lavorava come insegnante di inglese quando apprese l’esistenza degli “image club”, i locali a tema in cui venivano ricreate le fantasie sessuali degli avventori, ed incuriosita cercò di saperne di più, ma poichè era donna, fotografa e straniera le vennero sbarrate molte porte. Tornò così negli Stati Uniti, a San Francisco, dove intraprese una brillante carriera di avvocato, ma non riuscì mai ad abbandonare il desiderio di conoscere cosa ci fosse dietro quelle porte che le erano state chiuse, così nel 2005 tornò in Giappone con l’intento di documentare quel mondo segreto.
Con pazienza e determinazione è riuscita a entrare piano piano in quel mondo che le era stato escluso parlando e facendo amicizia con le ragazze che lavoravano in quei club, con i manager e con i clienti.

The author of the book is Joan Sinclair, U.S., and has harboured this book for 10 years before publishing; in 1995 she was in Tokyo and worked as an English teacher when she learned of the existence of “image clubs”, the themed clubs in which there were re-created sexual fantasies of the customers, and intrigued she tried to find out more, but since she was a woman, a photographer and a foreigner her way was barred. Thus, she come back to the United States, in San Francisco, where she began a brilliant career as a lawyer but she was never able to leave the desire to know what there was behind those doors that were closed, so in 2005 she returned to Japan with the intention to document this secret world.
With patience and determination slowly she was able to enter into that world which was barred, talking and making friends with the girls who worked in those clubs, with the managers and the customers.

“Pink Box” è il nome della famosa sala da ballo privata del noto locale Juso Music strip club di Osaka, ma “Pink” è anche un nome che in Giappone fa riferimento all’industria del sesso, chiamata altrimenti fuzoku.
L’industrai del sesso è costruita da una complessa struttura di locali che si muovono tra la legalità e l’illegalità e che provvedono a qualsiasi tipo di fantasia (spesso con kawaii gal), piacere e prestazione, dalla semplice compagnia fino ad arrivare al rapporto completo, passando per le più disparate vie intermedie.

“Pink Box” is the name of the famous private dance room of the well-known Juso Music strip club in Osaka, but ”Pink” is also the Japanese name for the commercial sex industry, ore else called fuzoku.
The sex industry is constructed by a complex structure of clubs moving between legality and illegality and attending to any kind of fantasy (often with kawaii gals), pleasure and performance, from simple company up to the intercourse, passing through all the kind of intermediate performance.

Mr. Taniguchi in queste parole riflette cosa significhi l’industria del sesso in Giappone, un mondo sommerso che provvede alle più disparate fantasie e bisogni della popolazione maschile, ed in piccola parte anche femminile.
Per capire meglio bisogna innanzitutto dire che dal 1958 la prostituzione in Giappone è illegale, ma nonostante ciò il sistema fuzoku accresce, aumentando le proprie entrate, grazie ai numerosi buchi legislativi. Per esempio, nelle famose Soapland viene ufficialmente offerto un bagno erotico e un massaggio eseguito da delle ragazze nude, il tutto pagato in anticipo, successivamente quello che accadrà in una stanza privata dipenderà solo dalla decisione presa tra il cliente e massaggiatrice, che verrà pagata direttamente per la prestazione extra, di cui la Soapland non risponderà.
Anche nei Pink Salons il cliente paga ufficialmente solo per dei costosi drink, che comprendono però anche il prezzo del sesso orale.

In these Mr. Taniguchi’s words there is reflected what sex industry means in Japan, a hidden world that provides the most disparate needs and fantasies of the male population, and in small part also female.
To better understand it’s necessay to said that since 1958 in Japan prostitution is illegal, but nevertheless the fuzoku system is expanding, increasing its revenue, thanks to the numerous holes in legislation. For example, in the famous Soaplands is officially offered an erotic bath and a massage performed by a naked girl, all paid before, then what will happen in a private room just depend on the decision between the client and the girl, who will paid directly for the extra performance, for which the Soapland not respond.
Even in the Pink Salons officially the client pays only for the expensive drinks, which include also the price of the oral sex.

Il mercato del piacere in Giappone si muove all’interno di mille contraddizioni, non parliamo solo di legalità e illegalità, del peso della tradizione e di una nuova morale più rigida, ma soprattutto la dicotomia tra la superficie (tatemae) e realtà (hanne).
Tatemae è la regola sociale è spinge e obbliga i giapponesi a comportarsi in modo educato e formale soprattutto nel luogo di lavoro, hannae sono le vere emozioni, da cui il sistema fuzoku trae il proprio carburante.

The sex industry in Japan is moving within a thousand contradictions, not only concerning about legality and illegality, about the weight of tradition and a new strict morality, but especially about the dichotomy between the surface (tatemae) and reality (hanne).
Tatemae is the social rule which pushes and forces the Japanese to behave in a polite and formal way mainly at the work place, hannae are the true emotions, from which the fuzoku system gets its fuel.

La cosa che più sorprende è che gli uomini pagano per avere il controllo e il potere, ma prima di poter appartarsi dovranno spesso dichiarare ai gestori del locale tutto quello che intendono fare nei minimi dettagli e attenersi a queste decisioni. Molto spesso in questo tipo di locali infatti è vietato l’ingresso ai non giapponesi, perchè più restii ad attenersi a quanto prestabilito.
Per esempio al Sei no Dendoshi (lett: Missionari del Sesso) di Ikebukuro a Tokyo vengono fatti compliare due tipi di questionario, il primo (pink questionnaire) nel caso si scelga di avere un “trattamento al pene”, il secondo (blue questionnaire) nel caso in cui si scelga un “trattamento all’ano”.

It is surprising that men pay to have the control and the power, but before going to a private room with a girl, they often have to declare to the managers of the clubs what they intend to do in detail and follow their decisions. In this type of clubs it is very often denied entry to the not-Japanese, because the foreigners are more reluctant to adhere to what was pre-estabilished.
For example, the Sei no Dendoshi (lit: Missionary of Sex) at Ikebukuro in Tokyo there are two types of questionnaire to fill, the first (pink questionnaire) is for the penis course the second (blue questionnaire) is for the “anal course”.
