Brandi Milne (1976, Anaheim, Sud California) è una pittrice statunitense che ha iniziato ad avvicinarsi al mondo dell’arte da autodidatta, prediligendo matite colorate ed acquarello che le permettevano maggior controllo nel disegno, passando poi all’utilizzo dell’acrilico di cui si è innamorata.
I suoi lavori nascono dalle più disparate ispirazioni, che si sviluppano nella rappresentazione ricorrente di temi kawaii contaminati da un pizzico di malinconia, malizia, ironia e “crudeltà”.
Il suo grande amore per dolci è evidente e tutti i golosi potranno ammirare estasiati i pasticcini, le caramelle e le più varie composizioni zuccherose che compaiono nei suoi lavori.
Brandi Milne è autrice anche del libro “So Good For Little Bunnies“, edito da Baby Tattoo, scritto e illustrato da lei, lavoro che l’ha impegnata per un anno.
Brandi è stata così gentile da rilasciarci un’intervista ed è con piacere che la ospitiamo qui.

Brandi Milne (1976, Anaheim, Southern California) is a US artist, who began to come close to the art world as self-taught, preferring watercolor and colored pencils that allow a great control in drawing, then she has started to use acrylics and she has fallen in love with them.
Her works come from many different inspirations, which develop the recurrent representation of kawaii themes contaminated by a touch of melancholy, malice, irony and “cruelty”.
Her great love for sweets is clear and who have a sweet tooth can admire ecstatically the delicious pastries, candies and the great variety of sugar compositions which appear in her work.
Brandi Milne is also the author of the book “So Good For Little Bunnies”, published by Baby Tattoo, written and illustrated by herself, it takes a year to make this work.
Brandi was so kind that she gives us an interview and it is a pleasure to talk about her here.

1. Hai iniziato a disegnare con le matite e con l’acquerello, passando poi all’acrilico.
C’è una tecnica che ti permette di esprimerti meglio o dipende dal soggetto che devi rappresentare?
You started to draw with pencils and watercolors, then you have begun to use acrylics.
Is there a technique that allows you to express yourself better or does it depend on the subject that you are representing?

Sì, trovo che gli acrilici mi permettano maggiore espressione e libertà rispetto all’acquerello e alla matita. È solo più complesso e impreciso per me, ma mi piace molto questo aspetto. Mi sento come se si potesse confondere la linea tra reale e fantasia, il che mi rende felice.

Yes, I find with acrylic paint I allow myself more expression and freedom than I do with watercolor and pencil. It’s just more messy and loose for me and I really enjoy that aspect. I feel like I can blur the line between realism and fantasy more too which makes me happy.

2. Reinterpreti in modo unico e personale diversi stili come gli schizzi di moda, fumetti, le fiabe e l’Art Nouveau (in particolare Alfons Mucha).
In che cosa ti riconosci di più e ti è mai capitato di rendere omaggio attraverso le tue illustrazioni a qualche artista?
You reinterpret different styles in a unique and personal way, as fashion sketches, comics, fairy tales and Art Nouveau (Alfons Mucha particularly).
In what do you recognize yourself most and have you ever paid tribute to any artist through your illustrations?

Sento che il mio lavoro renda omaggio a tutte le mie ispirazioni e gli artisti che ho studiato nel corso degli anni. Riesco a vedere le loro influenze in quello che faccio oggi - combinate con il mio stile personale.

I feel that my work pays tribute to all of my inspirations and the artists I’ve studied through the years. I can see their influences in what I do today - mixed with my personal style.

3. Nelle tue opere non c’è mai una interpretazione univoca, convivono dolcezza e un pizzico di “cattiveria”, serenità e malinconia, pasticcini e maialini. I contrasti riflettono di più la tua personalità o la società in cui viviamo?
There is never a clear interpretation in your works, cuteness and a bit of “nastiness”, serenity and melancholy, pastries and piglets coexist. Do the contrasts reflect more your personality or the society where we live?

I contrasti riflettono sia la mia personalità che il mondo che mi circonda. Riflettono ugualmente entrambi credo. Sento che nel mio lavoro è necessario sfruttare le emozioni contrastanti o i punti di vista. Se fosse tutto verso una sola direzione (tutto dolce, o tutto cattivo) mi sentirei come se mancasse una parte della “storia” o di un racconto. Inoltre mi piace l’equilibrio!

The contrasts reflect both my personality and the world surrounding me. They’re equally reflective of eachother I guess. I just feel in my work it’s necessary to tap into the contrasting emotions or mindsets. If it was all one side (all cute, or all evil) I would feel like it was lacking the “story” or narrative. Plus I enjoy the balance!

4. Hai realizzato delle illustrazioni ispirate ad Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie e anche quattro Toys esposti per la mostra “We Heart Wood”.
È la tua fiaba preferita?
You have made some illustrations inspired by Alice in Wonderland and also four toys shown in the exhibition “We Heart Wood”.
Is it your favourite fairy tale?

È una delle mie preferite - Amo moltissimo Alice nel paese delle Meraviglie, Pinocchio, Il mago di Oz, The Gingerbread Boy (Omino Pan di Zenzero), Hansel e Gretel e così via … come molti altri bambini, sono cresciuta con quelle storie e favole e ho sempre avuto una strana sensazione quando avevano una svolta e si trasformano da molto innocenti e dolci a completamente tristi e paurose e cattive! Mi spaventata quando ero piccola, e mi spingevano a farmi delle domande sugli adulti e da dove venivano per mettere questa freddezza nelle storie scritte per i bambini. Penso che sia fantastico!

One of my favorites - I love me some Alice In Wonderland, Pinocchio, The Wizard Of Oz, The Gingerbread Boy, Hansel and Gretel and so on… like many other kids, I grew up on those stories and fairytales and I always got a strange feeling when they’d twist and morph from very innocent and cute to totally dark and creepy and evil! It scared me when I was little, and made me have questions about adults and where they were coming from to put such coldness in stories written for children. I think that’s great!

5. Le tue eleganti fanciulle assumono spesso posizioni “riservate”, celandosi in qualche modo allo spettatore, e spesso tengono dolcemente tra le braccia frutta, animali e dolci.
Pensi che lo spettatore possa sentirsi escluso dall’immaginario rappresentato oppure che ne venga stimolata la sua curiosità?
Your elegant girls often adopt a “reserved” stance, hiding themselves from the viewer somehow, and they often hold gently fruits, animals and sweets in their arms.
Do you think that the audience feel excluded from the represented imaginary, or that this thing stimulates curiosity?

Spero che il pubblico si senta MAI escluso nei miei lavori. Uno degli stimoli che mi spinge a fare quello che faccio è che voglio mettere in relazione le persone - un pubblico, gli spettatori. Le ragazze non stanno tanto “nascondendo” se stesse, ma stanno proteggendo se stesse o ciò che di caro tengono stretto. Proteggono ciò che amano e hanno paura di perdere. Penso che la maggior parte delle persone possa rispecchiarsi in questo in un modo o nell’altro - non importa da dove vengano o dove vadano le loro vite.

I hope the audience NEVER feels excluded in my work. One of the driving forces that makes me do what I do is that I want to relate to people - an audience, viewers. The girls are not so much “hiding” themselves as they are protecting themselves or that which they hold dearly in their grasps. Protection of what they love, are fearful of losing. I think most people can relate to that in some form or another - no matter where they come from or where they’re going in their lives.

6. Le ragazze delle tue opere hanno sempre un abbigliamento curato nei dettagli e molto fantasioso, talvolta ispirato anche da dolci e frutta.
Sei anche tu una fashion victim? Per quale capo di abbigliamento o accessorio hai un debole?
The girls of your works always wear detailed and very imaginative outfit, also inspired by sweets and fruits.
Are you a fashion victim? What item of clothing or accessory do you love most?

Accidenti, sono davvero torturata dalla moda e dall’abbigliamento. Mi piace, può dare davvero molta ispirazione, ma allo stesso tempo, può essere molto frustrante e tortuosa! Amo gli accessori, gli stivali, le catene, i cappotti, le borse, gli anelli… le mie icone della moda sono Stevie Nicks, Farrah Fawcett, Cher (la Cher degli anni ‘70), Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Robert Plant - e potrei andare avanti per giorni!

Yikes, I’m so tortured by fashion and clothing. I love it, it can be very inspirational and then again, it can be very frustrating and torturous!! I love accessories, boots, chains, coats, bags, rings… my fashion icons are Stevie Nicks, Farrah Fawcett, Cher (70’s Cher), Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Robert Plant - I can go on for days!

7. Recentemente hai realizzato tre video per Sketch Theatre in cui si vede come nascono i tuoi disegni.
Com’è stata questa esperienza, in cui hai messo “a nudo” la tua arte?
You have recently released three videos for Sketch Theatre where it’s possible to watch how your drawings are born.
How was this experience, in which you lay your art bare?

Mi è piaciuto - Sketch Theatre è fortissimo! Mi sentivo un po’ nervosa quando stavamo iniziando il primo schizzo. Speravo di non fare “pasticci” durante le riprese - il che è abbastanza stupido! In arte - non ci dovrebbero essere “pasticci”, è libera, è fantasiosa e può assumere qualsiasi forma, è l’espressione dei pensieri! È stato divertente lavorare con Sketch Theatre.

I loved it - Sketch Theatre rules! I felt a little nervous when we were beginning the first sketch. I was hoping I wouldn’t “mess up” on camera - which is kinda silly! In art - there should be no “messing up”, it’s free, it’s imaginative and it can take on any form as it comes out of your head! It was such fun working with Sketch Theatre.

8. Sei un’artista a 360° gradi: oltre a dipingere hai realizzato dei toy, i peluches di Humpty Dumpty, un libro “So Good For Little Bunnies” e ti sei inoltrata anche nel mondo dell’abbigliamento.
Dove trovi il tempo per fare tutto e qual è stato il campo che ti ha stimolata di più?
You are a well-rounded artist: besides painting, you made a toy series, the plush Humpty Dumpty, the book “So Good For Little Bunnies”, and clothing design.
How do you get around to doing anything and what have the most challenging field been?

Beh, trovare il tempo di fare tutto quello che volevo è stato grazie al DURO LAVORO. Mi sto spingendo oltre il mio livello di comfort - nella pittura, facendo mostre, parlando con la gente, bussando alle porte, ecc - ho ottenuto di arrivare dove sono adesso. Le opportunità sono quelle che ti crei da solo per la maggior parte. Il progetto più impegnativo che ho fatto finora è stato il libro So Good For Little Bunnies. È difficile lavorare su un solo progetto (scrittura e illustrazione) per così tanto tempo, ma è una delle cose più gratificanti che abbia mai fatto!

Well, getting around to doing what I’ve wanted to do has been because of HARD WORK. Pushing myself beyond my comfort level - in painting, doing shows, talking to people, knocking on doors, etc - has gotten me where I am now. Opportunities are what you make yourself for the most part. The most challenging project I’ve done thus far has been the book So Good For Little Bunnies. It’s difficult to work on a single project (writing and illustrating) for so long, but it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve done!

9. La musica in qualche modo ispira ed influenza le tue opere?
Hai collaborato con delle rock star, com’è stata questa esperienza?
Does the music inspire and influence your work somehow?
You collaborated with some rock stars, how were those experiences?

La musica alimenta la mia testa e la mia immaginazione ne va pazza. Per me la musica è tutto ed è emozione - che a sua volta ispira storie e sentimenti di ciò che voglio buttare giù con i pennelli o le matite. È davvero inestimabile. Penso che molti artisti la pensino allo stesso modo riguardo la musica. Collaborare con rock star è molto simile a collaborare con altri artisti - è meraviglioso! Le persone creative sono persone creative, non importa in quale campo lavorino, ed è fantastico.

Music fuels my head and makes me insane with inspiration. For me, music is all story and feeling - which in turn inspires stories and feelings of my own that I want to put down with paint or pencil. It’s invaluable really. I think a lot of artists feel this way about music. Collaborating with rock stars is much like collaborating with other artists - it’s wonderful!! Creative people are creative people no matter what field they’re working in, and it’s so great.

10. Domanda sul futuro: a quali progetti stai lavorando e quali sono i tuoi sogni nel cassetto?
Question about the future: what are the projects on which are you working and what are your dreams?

Ora sto lavorando su dei pezzi per la mia prossima mostra personale il 26 giugno prossimo presso la Galleria Helford Corey a Culver City, California. Questa nuova collezione di lavori mi ha fatta sentire realizzata ed ispirata come non succedeva da tanto… Ho sofferto molto e sfidato me stessa per tutto il processo ed adesso finendo il lavoro, mi sento incredibilmente bene. Sono esausta emotivamente, e mi sento veramente orgogliosa di quello che ho fatto. Il mio sogno è di continuare a fare proprio questo - spremermi fino ALL’ULTIMA GOCCIA nel mio lavoro. Se questa Terra e il mondo dell’arte mi permetteranno di continuare a fare quello che sto facendo, pittura, disegno, scrivere libri, storie, progetti, commissioni, abbigliamento, mostre, progetti per FILM, e quant’altro - sarà il mio sogno che si avvera. Sono così grata di essere dove sono oggi. 

I’m now working on the final pieces for my next solo show on June 26th at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, California. This new body of work has made me feel more accomplished and inspired than I’ve felt in a long time…I’ve really struggled and challenged myself through the entire process and now finishing it up feels unbelievable. I’m exhausted emotionally, and I feel really good about it. My dream is to continue doing just that - putting every LAST DROP of everything I have into my work. If this world and this art community allows me to keep doing what I’m doing, painting, drawing, writing books, stories, projects, commissions, clothing, shows, MOVIE projects, and what not - it’ll be my dream come true. I’m so thankful to be where I am today.
