Camilla D’Errico (1980 - Vancouver, Canada) è una famosa pittrice, disegnatrice di fumetti e designer di toys, di origini italiane.
È la creatrice dei character Helmetgirls (ragazze dai copricapi fatti di ingranaggi) e Tanpopo (un manga di sua creazione ispirato a Faust, attualmente in corso di pubblicazione).
Il suo stile pittorico richiama quello dei manga, ma impreziosito da elementi che ricordano i ritratti rinascimentali. La presenza di animali, ingranaggi e colori vivaci, attira chi vede le sue opere, che viene poi rapito dagli occhi delle fanciulle protagoniste.

Camilla D’Errico (1980 - Vancouver, Canada) is a famous painter, cartoonist and toy designer, with Italian roots.
She is the creator of the Helmetgirls (girls that wear hats made by gears) and Tanpopo (a manga inspired by Faust, currently in progress).
Her pictorial style reminds the world of manga, but embellished with traits that seem to come from Renaissance portraits.
The presence of pets, gears and bright colors fascinates those who watch her works, who are also enraptured by the eyes of the female protagonists.

• 1. Le protagoniste dei tuoi quadri hanno copricapi molto originali… alcune di loro hanno in testa animali di tutte le specie mentre le Helmetgirls hanno ingranaggi e macchinari!
  Cosa cerchi di comunicare attraverso questi ritratti surreali?
  1. The protagonists of your paintings have very original hats… some of them have different kinds of animals in their head, while the Helmetgirls wear gears and equipment!
  What do you want to communicate through these surreal portraits?

Voglio per lo più comunicare l’estetica. Mi piace il mix surreale degli elementi meccanici e della natura, perché sembra sbagliato, ma tutto il mondo in realtà è in questo modo. Come un ibrido. È quindi una rappresentazione del nostro mondo, delle complessità e delle apparenti ironie, ma alla fine quello che vorrei è che lo spettatore trovasse il proprio significato in ogni dipinto.

I mostly want to communicate the aesthetic. I love the surreal mix of mechanics and nature because it seems wrong, but our entire world is actually this way. Like a hybrid. So it is a communication of our world, the complexities and the apparent ironies, but in the end what I really want to achieve is for the viewer to find their own meaning in each painting.

• 2. Tra animali morbidi e kawaii come pecorelle e uccellini, ne troviamo altri non propriamente buoni e carini, come coccodrilli e tarantole.
  A cosa è dovuta la scelta dei soggetti? Da cosa prendi spunto per ritrarre questi animali comuni ed esotici?
  2. Along with soft and kawaii animals like sheep and birds, we find also not really good and cute ones, like crocodiles and tarantulas.
  How do you choose these subjects? What inspire you to portray these common and exotic animals?

Ogni animale ha uno scopo nel mondo, e un senso - forse per una cultura o una tribù o una società. Ogni animale ha un significato e anche se può non essere buono o carino, è importante ricordare anche che gli animali sono al mondo per una ragione, e hanno un ruolo da svolgere. A volte nei dipinti hanno dure espressioni che rivelano ‘cattivi’ sentimenti.

Every animal has a purpose in the world, and a significance - maybe to a culture or a tribe or a society. Every animal has meaning and even though it may not be good or cute, it is important to also remember that the animals are in the world for a reason, and they have a role to play. Sometimes in the painting they will be a strong expression of a ‘bad’ feeling.

• 3. Chi disegna con così tanta cura il mondo animale non può non amare la natura.
  Dietro ai tuoi quadri c’è un messaggio ecologista?
  3. People, who designs with so much care the animal world, cannot but love nature.
  Have your paintings an ecology message?

Spero che i miei quadri possano portare più gente ad amare e rispettare gli animali. Io sono una sostenitrice dei diritti degli animali e voglio aiutare gli animali a stare al sicuro e ad essere protetti. Abbiamo bisogno di proteggere la natura - gli animali sono innocenti e li stiamo distruggendo insieme al loro habitat naturale. Siamo gli unici che possono salvarli.

I hope that my paintings can bring more people to loving and respecting animals. I am an advocate of animal rights and I want to help animals be safe and protected. We need to protect nature - animals are innocent and we are destroying their natural habitats and killing them. We are the only ones who can save them.

• 4. I tuoi quadri hanno un forte impatto visivo sia quando utilizzi toni vivaci sia quando ritrai in bianco nero. Fai una scelta consapevole o ti viene spontaneo in base al soggetto?
  4. Your paintings have a strong visual impact both when you use bright colors and just black and white. Do you make a conscious choice or is it spontaneous according to the subject?

La mia scelta dei colori è sistematica e deliberata. Passo molto tempo a scegliere i colori a seconda del tema del dipinto. Anche il bianco e nero è intenzionale, perché posso aggiungere tonnellate di dettagli e l’unico modo per vedere quei dettagli è quello di dipingere con linee nere. Anche lo spazio bianco in quei dipinti gioca un ruolo molto importante: è essenziale per il quadro.

My choice of colors is systematic and deliberate. I spend a lot of time choosing colors depending on the theme of the painting. The black and white is also deliberate because I can add tons of detail and the only way to see that detail is to paint in black lines. The white space in those paintings also plays a very important role: it is essential to the painting.

• 5. Sei una grande fan di Sanrio e Disney a tal punto da dedicare alcune tue opere a celebri personaggi kawaii come Hello Kitty, Pom Pom Purin, Pandapple, Malefica e Crudelia De Mon.
  Cosa ti lega a questo mondo fantastico della cultura kawaii?
  5. You’re a big fan of Sanrio and Disney to the point to dedicate some of your works to famous kawaii characters like Hello Kitty, Pom Pom Purin, Pandapple, Maleficent and Cruella De Vil.
  How are you connected to this fantastic world of kawaii culture?

Adoro la cultura kawaii e Hello Kitty è uno dei miei marchi di personaggi preferiti di tutti i tempi. Sono cresciuta guardando i film Disney e cartoni animati quindi è un onore poter lavorare con queste aziende o dedicare delle opere d’arte ai loro personaggi perché hanno avuto un ruolo molto importante nella mia vita.

I adore the kawaii culture and Hello Kitty is one of my favorite character brands of all time. I grew up watching Disney films and cartoons so it is an honor to be able to work with these companies or to dedicate art to their characters because they have played such an important role in my life.

• 6. La tua indole di illustratrice di manga e la tua vena kawaii si riflettono automaticamente in tutte le tue opere.
  Quali sono i tuoi generi e i tuoi mangaka preferiti?
  Trai ispirazione da alcuni manga? Tra le tue opere ce n’è qualcuna che hai creato pensando a un manga in particolare?
  6. All your works automatically reflect that you are an illustrator of manga and that you love kawaii.
  What is your favorite genre of manga and what are your favorite mangaka?
  Are you inspired by manga? Are some of your works inspired by a specific manga?

I miei preferiti sono Naruto, Blame!, Clover, Hatsukoi Limited, x1999. Sono un fan degli Shojou manga, naturalmente! I miei artisti preferiti sono Terada Katsuya, Clamp, Range Murata, solo per citarne alcuni.
Sono sicuramente ispirata dai manga e lo potete vedere nelle mie opere. In realtà nessuna di queste è tuttavia ispirata ad un manga specifico. Infatti, ho passato più di un anno nello sviluppo di un mio stile unico influenzato dai manga e anche dai maestri del Rinascimento. Si tratta di un mix insolito ma funziona bene per me ^__^.

My favorites are Naruto, Blame!, Clover, Hatsukoi Limited, x1999. I am a fan of Shojou manga, of course! My favorite artists are Terada Katsuya, Clamp, Range Murata, to name just a few.
I am most definitely inspired by manga and you can see it in my art. None of my art is actually inspired by any one specific manga though. In fact, I spent over one year creating my own unique style influenced by manga and also Renaissance masters. It is an unusual mix but it works well for me ^__^.

• 7. I tuoi quadri emanano spesso malinconia, innocenza e delicatezza, ma talvolta sono anche un po’ piccanti con scene di seduzione.
  Le protagoniste sono bimbe fuori ma donne dentro?
  7. Your paintings often communicate melancholy, innocence and delicacy, but sometimes there are also seductive scenes.
  Are the protagonists little girls outside but women inside?

Nello stile manga, i protagonisti hanno sempre un aspetto molto giovane. Tutti i manga sono così e la mia arte lo riflette. C’è un lato seducente nelle ragazze, ed è anche un riflesso di ciò che gli adolescenti si sentono. Si tratta di uno dei periodi emotivamente più turbolenti delle nostre vite, i nostri sentimenti riguardo il sesso e il romanticismo sono molto forti.

In manga style, the protagonists always look very young. All manga is like this and my art reflects that. There is a seductive side to the girls, and it is also a reflection of what adolescents feel. It is one of the most emotionally turbulent times in our lives, and our feelings about sex and romance are very strong.

• 8. Tanpopo e Kuro sono i protagonisti del tuo manga autoprodotto ispirato a Faust.
  Raccontaci come è nato questo progetto e come sta evolvendo.
  8. Tanpopo and Kuro are the protagonists of your self-financed manga inspired by Faust.
  Tell us how this project has started and how it is evolving.

Tanpopo è iniziato pensando fosse una serie breve, un libro di 20 pagine ed è stato così popolare che ho deciso di farne una serie di graphic novel. Ho pubblicato Tanpopo 3 di recente e sto lavorando alla sceneggiatura di Tanpopo 4 e 5. Farò in una serie di 10 libri in totale. Sto anche realizzando molti gadget e toy per i personaggi di Tanpopo e Kuro. Chiunque legga Tanpopo lo ama veramente, e mi piacerebbe diffondere questo lavoro il più possibile.

Tanpopo started as a close-ended, 20 page book and it was so popular that I decided to make it into a graphic novel series. I have released Tanpopo 3 recently and am working on the script for Tanpopo 4 and 5. I will make it into a series of 10 books in total. I am also doing a lot of work to make merchandise and toys for the characters Tanpopo and Kuro. Everyone who reads Tanpopo really loves it, and I would like to spread this work as far as possible.

• 9. Tra i tuoi progetti compaiono molte customizzazioni di toys e, in casa D’Errico, ha preso vita il character Kuro.
  Sei una collezionista di toys? Qual è il toy che ti sei più divertita a customizzare? Com’è nato Kuro?
  9. Among your many projects we find customized toys and Kuro, a character designed by you.
  Are you a toy collector? What is the toy that you enjoyed to customize most? How is Kuro born?

Io sono un collezionista di toy! Amo i giocattoli e ho personalizzato i toy degli altri artisti per anni. Ma ora - avrò il mio personale fai-da-te di Kuro e sono molto entusiasta. Kuro è un personaggio di Tanpopo ed è il diavoletto che guida Tanpopo. Lui è molto kawaii e la sua forma è perfetta per i giocattoli. Ho iniziato con i peluche e nel 2011 lancerò i vinili.

I am a toy collector! I love toys and I have been customizing other artists’ toys for years. But now - I will have my own DIY of Kuro and I am very excited about it. Kuro is the character from Tanpopo and he is the little devil who is Tanpopo’s guide through life. He is extremely kawaii and his shape is perfect for toys. I started with the plush and in 2011 I will launch the vinyls.

• 10. Domanda sul futuro: a quali progetti stai lavorando e quali sono i tuoi sogni nel cassetto?
  10. Are you working on some projects? What are your dreams?

Continuerò a lavorare su Tanpopo e presto inizierà la graphic novel di Helmetgirls. Sono molto entusiasta di questo! Sto anche facendo dei dipinti e sto anche preparando dei quadri per una mostra personale, forse nel 2012. Dal momento che mi ci vuole molto tempo per dipingere ogni pezzo, ho bisogno di più tempo per creare le opere necessarie per un grande show. Quindi stanno succedendo tante cose - arte e fumetti - e sto seguendo il mio sogno ^_^

I will continue working on Tanpopo and I will also soon start the graphic novel for Helmetgirls. I am very excited about this! I will also be doing some painting and I am preparing paintings for a solo show, possibly in 2012. Since it takes me a very long time to paint each piece, I need more time to create art for a big show. So there is lots happening - art and comics - so I am following my dream ^_^
