Timothy Haugen is an american toy-creator who makes dreams come true. His brand is Fantastic Toys. Fantastic Toys world means pastel coulors and felt-characters who seem to come from a fairy world.

Hi Timothy, tell us about you.
- 1. Cosa spinge un uomo ad avvicinarsi al mondo dei peluches?
1. What push a man to approach to soft toys world?
Ho iniziato la mia carriera come illustratore, ma la mia inclinazione mi ha portato verso la scultura. Penso ai miei peluches come illustrazioni 3D, ma invece di usare l’argilla uso il feltro. Credo che più illustratori farebbero peluches se non avessero paura di cucire.
I began my career has an illustrator but started to lean towards sculpting. I think of my soft toys as illustrations in 3-D. But instead of using clay I’m using felt. I think more illustrators would make plush if they were not so afraid of sewing.
- 2. Illustrazione, graphic design e realizzazione di giocattoli: lavoro o hobby?
2. Illustration, graphic design and toys creation: These are your occupations or your hobbies?
Sono le mie passioni! Ogni anno il mio lavoro continua a crescere, non posso più chiamarli hobby. :)
They are my passion! Each year my business continues to grow so I can’t call it a hobby anymore. :)
- 3. Chi sono i tuoi artisti preferiti? C’è un artista che consideri il tuo maestro?
3. Which are your favourite artists? Is there an artist whom you consider your master?
Sono della vecchia guardia. Sono cresciuto con il desiderio di diventare come Charles Schultz, Walt Disney e Tim Burton.
I’m old school. I grew up wanting to be Charles Schultz, Walt Disney and Tim Burton.
- 4. Quali sono le tue fonti di ispirazione?
4. What are your sources of inspiration?
Vengo ispirato da altri artisti. Mi capita di vedere qualcosa da altri artisti e penso che potrei fare un bel peluches o un giocattolo di carta.
I’m mostly inspired by other artists. Sometimes I’ll see something from another artist and think that would make a nice plush or paper toy.
- 5. Trai ispirazione anche dai film, dai cartoni animati e dai libri?
5. Do you find inspiration in movies, cartoons or books?
Per ispirarmi colleziono dei libri d’arte vintage. Cerco sempre nell’arte del passato, per reinterpretarla in un modo più fresco.
I collect vintage craft books for inspiration. I’m always researching for old time crafts to revive with a fresh spin.
- 6. Cerbiatti, unicorni, gufi, orsi, puzzole, coniglietti, gnomi, funghetti dolci e felici… Puoi dirci in anteprima alcune idee per i tuoi prossimi soggetti?
6. Fawns, unicorns, owls, bears, polecats, bunnies, gnomes, sweets and happy mushrooms… Can you tell us some ideas for your next subject?
Ho un sacco di idee, ma in questo periodo mi piacerebbe sviluppare il tema del circo con giraffe, elefanti, orsi danzanti e una giostra di pony funzionante.
I have a ton of ideas but someday I’d like to do a circus theme with giraffes, elephants, dancing bears and a working carousel with ponies.
- 7. Qual è la tua creazione preferita e perchè?
7. What is your favourite creation? Why?
I miei giocattoli di belle arti perchè ci investo molto tempo e si vede.
My fine art toys are my favorite because I spent a lot of time on them and it shows.
- 8. Che tipo di materiale preferisci usare?
8. What kind of material do you prefer using?
Adoro usare il feltro. Sono sempre in cerca di qualcosa che possa essere fatto con il feltro e derivati.
I love working with felt. I’m always on the look out for anything thats made with felt and felt products.
- 9. Quando crei un giocattolo, immagini la persona che lo acquisterà?
9. When you make a toy, do you imagine the person who will buy it?
I miei acquirenti abituali sono adulti. Molte delle persone che collezionano i miei lavori sono giovani donne che amano le cose carine. Alcune volte anche le mamme acquistano i miei giocattoli di carta per fare dei lavoretti con i loro bambini e questo mi rende felice.
I typically market my plush to adult collectors. Most of my collectors are young women who like cute stuff. Although mothers sometimes purchase my paper toys for crafting time with the kids which always makes me happy.
- 10. Qual è il soggetto più carino e perchè?
10. What is the cutest subject? Why?
Per me sono i miei cerbiatti. Sono abbastanza popolari. Ne ho fatti centinaia da quando ho iniziato a fare peluches.
My cutest subject has been my fawns. They have been quite popular. I’ve made hundreds since I ‘ve been making plush.

These toys are adorable and they all have such a nostalgic feel. I have some nieces who I’m sure could create some fantastic stories while playing with these.
I do some crafting (never worked much with felt though), and I think these could also look great in crochet form. Has he ever tried making any toys from yarn?
