Non Solo Kawaii

Juri Ueda (Osaka, Giappone) è un’artista giapponese che con delicati acquerelli ci introduce in un mondo incantato dove dolci fate d’acqua e di terra vivono in armonia con la natura. I colori assumono svariate sfumature a tal punto che non si sa dove inizino l’acqua e il cielo e dove finiscano i grandi occhi delle protagoniste.
Kawaii non è solo il tipo di stile che Juri sa rappresentare, ma anche l’atmosfera sognante che ci sa comunicare. Un sogno che sarebbe bello diventasse realtà.

Juri Ueda (Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese artist who bring us through delicate watercolors into an enchanted world where sweet water and earth fairies are living in harmony with nature. The colors take various shades so that it’s not possible to see where begin the water and the sky and where finish the big eyes of the protagonists.
Kawaii is not only the Juri’s style, but also the dreamy atmospheres that she can communicate. A dream that would be nice to come true.

• 1. La palette cromatica che utilizzi è molto delicata e ricca di toni azzurri e verdi. Come nascono i tuoi colori? Perchè hai scelto gli acquerelli come tecnica di pittura?
  1. The colors that you’re using are very delicate and rich in blue and green tones. How do you choose what colors to use? Why did you choose the watercolor as your technique of painting?

La maggior parte del tempo, ho solo un’idea molto vaga di come i colori saranno nel dipinto fino a che non ho il pennello in mano. Tendo ad usare molto blu e verde, mi fanno semplicemente sentire bene… forse questi sono i colori del mio naturale stato d’animo.
L’acquerello ha bisogno di studiare bene certi passaggi, ma una volta che inizio a dipingere, i colori vanno da sè, adattando le tonalità per conto proprio, e si può solo seguire il flusso. Per me questo rende l’esperienza della pittura più emozionante e divertente. È uno dei motivi per cui amo l’acquerello, e l’ho scelto come mio mezzo.

Most of the time, I only have very vague idea about what colors are going to be in the painting until I have a brush in my hand. I do tend to use lots of blues and greens, they just make me feel good… maybe these are the colors of my natural mood.
Watercolor needs good planning in certain steps, but once you start painting, the paints will do their thing, making colors on their own, and you can just go with the flow. To me it makes the experience of painting more exciting and fun. That’s one of the reason I love watercolor, and chose it as my medium.

• 2. Le tue protagoniste hanno occhi grandi e plumbei che sembra riflettano non solo ciò che vedono, ma anche ciò che provano. Il loro è uno sguardo malinconico o sognatore?
  2. Your protagonists have big and leaden eyes, and it seems that they reflect not only what they see, but also what they feel. Are they gloomy or dreamer?

Vorrei lasciare l’interpretazione alle persone che li guardano. Sarebbe meraviglioso se questi occhi potessero riflettere anche ciò che gli spettatori sentono.

I would like to leave it to the people who look at them. It would be wonderful if these eyes could reflect what the viewers feel too.

• 3. Ogni tuo quadro sembra che rappresenti la scena di una storia più articolata, come se fosse l’istantanea di una fiaba. Trai ispirazione dal mondo delle fiabe? C’è una fiaba alla quale sei più legata?
  3. Your every painting seems to represent the scene of a story more articulated, as a snapshot of a fairy tale. Do you get inspired from the world of fairy tales? Is there a fairy tale of which you’re more fond?

Fiabe e racconti popolari mi intrigano. Spesso i più semplici sono i più vivaci, e lasciano moltissimo alla nostra immaginazione. Fin da quando ero piccola, mi sono sempre divertita a ricreare e ritrarre la versione delle storie che era nella mia mente. Anche se non dipingo nessuna storia in particolare, credo che il mondo delle favole che ho creato nella mia infanzia abbia ancora una grande influenza sul mio lavoro.

Fairy tales and folk tales intrigue me. Often the simplest ones are the most colorful, leaving so much to our imagination. Ever since I was little, I have always enjoyed re-creating and picturing my version of the stories in my mind. Even though I do not paint to any particular stories, I believe the fairy tale world I created in my childhood still has a big influence on my work.

• 4. Un mondo popolato da sirene e fate. Cosa ti affascina del loro mondo incantato?
  4. A world populated by mermaids and fairies. What fascinate you in their enchanted world?

La magia soprattutto… Per me è il mondo delle possibilità e senza limitazioni.

Magic, most of all… For me it’s the world with possibility and no limitation.

• 5. Anche la natura è protagonista dei tuoi quadri. È una tua musa ispiratrice?
  5. Even the nature is a protagonist of your paintings. Is it your muse?

Vivo, e ho sempre vissuto in una grande città. Non avendo una vera esperienza di vita in mezzo alla natura incontaminata, non posso dire di averla veramente capita. Ciò che mi ispira è spesso un piccolo frammento di essa, come dei bei fiori in camera, lo splendido sorgere del sole fuori dalla finestra, o il pallido ricordo di una giornata in spiaggia.

I am, and have always been a big city person. Having no real experience of living in big nature, I cannot say that I truly understand it. What inspires me is often a tiny fragment of it, like beautiful flowers in the room, the gorgeous sunrise outside the window, or the faint memory of a day at the beach.

• 6. Nei tuoi acquerelli si legge un forte legame tra uomo e natura. Cosa ne pensi dei problemi ecologici che sta attraversando il nostro pianeta?
  6. In your watercolors there is a strong bond between humans and nature. What do you think about the environmental problems of our planet?

Sento che la natura umana non sia più in armonia con la natura, non perché la nostra natura sia cambiata, ma perché abbiamo ottenuto la tecnologia per appagarci, ed è una cosa potente abbastanza da distruggere la natura che si trova sulla sua strada. Non credo che tutte le persone siano fondamentalmente buone, né cattive. Non possiamo annullare ciò che è già stato fatto, ma spero che troveremo presto il modo per salvare quello che rimane, per il nostro bene.
Per ora, penso che tutto ciò che possiamo fare è essere consapevoli del fatto che ognuno di noi è responsabile, e fare in ogni momento ciò che riteniamo giusto per conto nostro, per quanto questo gesto sia grande o piccolo.

I feel human nature has gone out of harmony with nature, not because our nature has changed, but because we achieved the technology to fulfill it, which is also powerful enough to destroy nature along the way. I do not believe that all people are fundamentally good, nor evil. We cannot undone what has already been done, but I am hopeful that we will find the way to save what is still left soon, for our own sake.
For now, I think all we can do is to be aware that each one of us is responsible, and do what we believe is right on our own, however little or big it is, in each moment.

• 7. Le dolcissime protagoniste che rappresenti hanno forme arrotondate e occhi grandi, caratteristiche fisiognomiche che sono tipiche dei manga. Sei una lettrice di manga? Quali sono i tuoi manga e autori preferiti? Ne trai ispirazione dal punto di vista grafico?
  7. The sweet protagonists which you design have rounded shapes and big eyes, physiognomic characteristics typical of manga. Are you a reader of manga? What are your favorite manga and authors? Do you graphically get inspired from them?

Quando ero piccola, ho letto molti manga, soprattutto amavo quelli più popolari, i manga del tipo “dramma senza fine” degli anni ‘80.
Anche se mi sono allontanata da questa lettura mentre crescevo, nella mia adolescenza, di sicuro hanno lasciato un grande impatto sulla mia percezione del kawaii nei personaggi. Come le fiabe, i manga che ho letto da bambina hanno ancora influenza sulla mia arte nelle sue radici.

As a child, I read a lot of manga, especially loved the over-the-top, never-ending-drama type of manga from the 80s.
Although I drifted away from them as I grew into my teenage years, they sure had left a big impact on my perception of cuteness in characters. Like fairy tales, the manga I read as a child also still has influence on my art on the very basic level.

• 8. In molti tuoi quadri compaiono gatti neri. In Italia le persone scaramantiche sostengono che i gatti neri portino sfortuna (noi non lo siamo e li adoriamo!!!), inoltre il gatto nero ricompare nelle storie
  legate alle streghe. La scelta di questo animale ha un particolare significato?
  8. In a lot of your paintings there are black cats. In Italy superstitious people think that black cats bring bad luck (we do not, we adore them!!!), there is also the black cat in many stories about witches. Has the choice of this animal a particular meaning?

Il gatto nero è uno di quegli animali che diventa da subito un simbolo per alcune persone. Può sempre essere sia semplicemente un gatto carino, sia un simbolo speciale per ogni persona, allo stesso tempo.
Credo che il fatto che i gatti neri siano associati alla sfortuna e alle streghe, li renda ancora più misteriosi e affascinanti. Io tendo a credere a tutto quello che è considerato male, può anche essere buono di rimando - come i ragni, possono far paura, ma potrebbero anche portare fortuna.
E, naturalmente, ho un gatto nero :)

Black cats are one of those animals that instantly become a symbol to some people. They can always be both, just a cute cat, and also a symbol that’s special to each person, at the same time.
I think the fact that black cats are associated with bad luck and witches makes them even more mysterious and appealing. I tend to believe whatever that is considered to be bad, can also be as good in return - like if you are scared of spiders, they might bring good luck too.
And of course, I have a black cat :)

• 9. Sei nata e vivi attualmente ad Osaka. Nelle tue opere c’è qualcosa di tipico della cultura giapponese?
  9. You are born and currently live in Osaka. Is there something typical of Japanese culture in your works?

Ogni volta che torno in Giappone dalla mia vita oltreoceano, la cultura pop giapponese - o ciò che riconosco come tale - mi ha sempre fatto sentire come un’aliena. Qualche tempo dopo essere tornata per restare, ho iniziato a dipingere nel mio stile attuale, perchè è quello che mi viene più naturale. È molto interessante che il risultato finale si è rivelato presentare queste evidenti influenze della cultura pop giapponese, come il manga, come detto prima.

Every time I came back to Japan from my life overseas, Japanese pop culture - or what I recognized as it - always made me feel like an alien. A while after coming back to stay, I started painting in my current style as what comes most naturally to me. It is very interesting that the end results turned out to present such obvious Japanese pop culture influence, like manga, as mentioned.

• 10. Hai delle novità da annunciarci? Nuove opere o prossime mostre?
  10. Have you any news to say? New works or upcoming exhibitions?

Nel mese di luglio, ci sarà una mostra chiamata “Wishful Thinkers” e vi parteciperò come artista presso la C.A.V.E. Gallery in California.
Manca ancora un po’, ma sarà una mostra piuttosto emozionante. Spero che molte persone si rechino in visita e si divertano!

In July, I will have a show called “Wishful Thinkers“, as a featured artist at the C.A.V.E. Gallery in California.
Still a long time away, but it will be quite an exciting exhibition. I hope lots of people will visit and have fun!
