Lisa Petrucci (1963 - Massachusetts, USA) is an American painter who represents her passions with a kitsch and kawaii style.
Since she was a little girl, she had a passion for the art, drawing cartoon and comic books characters and kawaii animals, like horses, koalas and rabbits.

The first time we saw her work was in 2009, during “Pop Art Playmates” show at the Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in Rome. We were fascinated by her ability to make simple kawaii things, like toys, comics and puppies, true works of art and to be able to make cute also sexy pin-up and scary monsters.
Lisa makes everything sweet and cute with a hint of kitsch that makes her work fun and colorful.
Lisa says that her character are Kickass Kuties and a book of illustrations is dedicated to them “Kickass Kuties - The Art of Lisa Petrucci” published by Dark Horse.
We asked some questions to this artist that we love very much and here is her interview.

1. Your style is very recognizable: cute little girls with big eyes that remind deformed manga characters. Is there something that has inspired you to create these characters?
All’inizio ero molto influenzata dalle bambole Liddle Kiddles e dai grandi occhi in stile Keane degli anni ‘60.
In the beginning, I was most inspired by Liddle Kiddles dolls and Keane-style “big eye” art from the 1960s. I had Liddle Kiddles as a child and have always liked their faces, especially their eyes. They have great expressions and eyeliner! And the “big eye” art of the 1960s is so closely associated with kitsch, so this appealed to me as well. Since then I discovered other vintage dolls that have inspired my art, as well as other pop cultural references.

2. Your characters are sweet and express their joy, even your little devils and monsters. How can you show this feeling? Is there anything important to you to communicate to the public?
I like the idea of cute and creepy / naughty and nice.
It’s not enough to make cute characters, there has to be something subversive about them.

- 3. Spesso rappresenti eroine dei telefilm, dei cartoni animati e dei comics. Quali sono i tuoi personaggi preferiti? Chi vorresti ritrarre in futuro?
3. You often represent the protagonists of TV series, cartoons and comics. What are your favorite characters? Who would you like to portray in the future?
I am a baby boomer, so popular culture has a huge influence on me. I watched a lot of television and movies in my youth, and loved cartoons and comic books. Wonder Woman was my favorite, so I guess I’ve always been a feminist.
As a child I saw a lot of b-movies at the drive-in too, so low-budget cinema has always fascinated me. I’ve done paintings of some of my favorite movie characters; Divine, Joan Crawford, Baby Jane, Vulnavia from “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”, Barbara Steele, “Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill!”, and a variety of exploitation films including an obscure 1970’s porno, “Bat Pussy”!
Most recently, I did a painting for a John Waters-themed exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. I based it on the female characters from “Pink Flamingos”. It was really fun to do!

4. In addition to your typical kawaii “deformed” characters, there are your sensual Pretty Pin-Ups in actual proportions. Are you fascinated by burlesque?
I’ve been well aware of striptease and burlesque long before the current burlesque revival. I originally discovered dancers and pin-up girls from vintage men’s magazines I collected and then when I saw some burlesque films Something Weird Video released on video in the early 1990s. Had there been opportunities to do burlesque performances when I was younger, I most certainly would have been involved in the renaissance! So instead, I make art that references pin-up and burlesque, and write about it for Something Weird Video.

5. Toys are often represented in your paintings. How did this passion start and how it has turned into collecting? What is the highlight of your collection? What will be the next toy that is going to be part of it and unfortunately what you won’t ever get?
As a child, I was obsessed with dolls and toys (and still am!). Liddle Kiddles were my favorites as small girl, then Barbie and other fashion dolls. Going to the toy store with my father was a very big deal. He would buy me most any toys that I wanted, and we often went to great lengths to find them, like when I wanted a Blythe and Derry Daring in the early 1970s. Those were hard to find even back then! In my twenties, I had found a few Liddle Kiddles at thrift stores in the 1980s, but got seriously into doll collecting in the 1990s when ebay made it much easier to find anything one wants. I have amassed a huge Liddle Kiddles collection. They make me the most happy. My most rare doll is an original mint-in-box blonde Blythe I found in the 1990s. I had this doll as a child, so that makes it extra special. Mini Martians and Kooky Spookys are also amongst my most prized collectibles! I don’t collect as much as I used to, but I’m always adding to the collection.
The only other doll I’m dying for is an original Ideal Wonder Woman Super Queen! These are nearly impossible to find!

6. Puppies are always cute, but you can make them more kawaii in your painting! What are your favorite animals? Do you have any pets?
I cuccioli SONO carini! Personalmente preferisco i gatti e i micini.
Puppies ARE cute! Our daughter Danielle just adopted a white german sheperd puppy named Luka, so he will definitely show up in my art at some point. But personally, I prefer cats and kittens. You’ll see cats in many of my paintings. We had three cats, but two of them were quite elderly and passed away this past year. I was devastated when my beloved 17 year old Gomez was diagnosed with cancer and died shortly thereafter. He was my best pal and often appeared in my art. A month later, our Pippi (also 17 years old) passed away. So now we’re left with Josie, a sad, old lady kitty with health problems. We’re hoping to get two new kittens once Josie joins Gomez and Pippi.

7. Your characters have a very nice look. Do they reflect your style? What is your relationship with fashion?
Beh, grazie!
Well, thank you! Yes, my characters are definitely my alter egos and miniature versions of me.
I have always loved fashion, and now prefer vintage styles from the 1940s-60s. Personally, I go for a bad girl, gothic, or rockabilly look. I like polka dots and leopard print. My husband Mike often says I dress kind of like a naughty secretary or nerdy housewife! He would like me to look more 1970s, like Marsha from the Brady Bunch! But that will never happen!

8. What is the technique that you prefer and what is your creative process?
I work in acrylic paints on wood. They are liquid acrylic, so much more smooth. I do thin layers of paint to create my effects. I look for things in my environment to inspire me, mostly my collections. I collect tiki, kitsch, circus memorabilia, vintage pin-up, Halloween, monster and horror, and tons of other stuff. Most often I’m asked to do paintings for themes shows, so that dictates what I portray.

9. You always use a wooden base for your paintings. Is there a reason behind this choice? Do you choose the base according to what you are going to paint or vice versa?
Up until this year, I have mostly done paintings on wood slabs. I decided to use them because they reminded me of tacky kitsch souvenirs they sell in American tourist traps. Or that hang in a mobile home trailer. Those wood plaques seemed to be the perfect format for my pop culture inspired paintings.

10. Are you working on some projects? What are your dreams?
I’m planning on taking my art in a very new direction this next year. I intend to keep using “cute” and “kitsch” imagery, but in a larger, looser style.
I have a solo show scheduled for January 2013 at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles where these new painting will premiere.
As far as future plans, I’d like to have a line of dolls made with rooted hair and cute clothing, as well as licensing images for more accessories like purses, jewelry and fabric designs.
