It’s time to Rock’n'Dolls!
There is a new music at MondoPOP

The female subjects look like dolls with big eyes and long hair, they remind of Barbie, Blythe, cartoons… It’s hard to say if artists were inspired by some dolls in particular because in actual fact, they portray their ideal of feminine beauty and this is the shape of women in their head.
They are not just
inanimate dolls, they are full of meanings that go beyond pure aesthetics: they are rock dolls, they are tattooed, they have an intense life, they love and sing… They are stars!

    1. Wanda Jackson is an American rock singer and guitarist, known as the Queen of Rockabilly. Why did you choose to portray Wanda Jackson in your artwork?

I have always enjoyed Wanda Jackson’s music and style. I’m a big rockabilly fan. She was a pioneer of women in rock and roll and is an inspiration to me.

    2. Your characters become dolls in your artworks and they remind me of Blythe style.
Do you like dolls? Is there a kind of doll in particular which influences your imagination?

I adore dolls! Especially vintage ones from the 1960s and early 1970s like Liddle Kiddles, Dawn, Barbie and, of course Blythe. I’ve been seriously collecting vintage dolls since the early 1990s. Dolls are the primary influence on all of my art.

    1. “Ekstasy” is your portrait of the German singer Nina Hagen. Why did you choose to portray Nina Hagen in your artwork?

My portrait “Ekstasy” is an interpretation of the album cover released in 1985. I chose that Image because it is iconic, and because the song “Ekstasy” is one of my favourite songs of all time. Nina’s an amazing vibrant original creatrix and I’ve been wanting to paint her for some time now, I was even going to curate a show here in Melbourne based around “80’s Ladies” so that I could paint her. When I was give then theme Rock ‘N’ Dolls by MondoPOP I knew exactly what I was going to paint!

    2. This character reminds me of the Misfits’ style, Jem and the Holograms’ rivals. Do you like dolls? Is there a kind of doll in particular which influences your imagination?

Well actually I loved Jem and the Holograms when I was little and I still do. I really love the post punk and new wave synth pop style from the 80’s. I feel very lucky to have been a child at the time that so many amazing cartoons and musicians were about. My next painting will in fact be of a character from “Jem and the Holograms”. So yes, Jem has influenced me greatly.
I have a few dolls like Care Bears, Glow Bugs and Rainbow Brite. I have had many more but I gave most of them away to my nieces and friends. I am trying to be a minimalist, it’s very hard because I always want to buy toys, especially unicorns.

  • 3. Quali canzoni inseriresti nella tua perfetta playlist?
    3. What songs would be part of your perfect playlist?

Well I definitely recommend to listen to “Ekstasy” - better yet watch the live performance in Rio, its one of the best live performances ever, along with her live performance of African Reggae live from Roskilde, those songs always makes me happy!
When I paint I listen to a lot of early synth, minimalism and 90’s ambient electronic music, so I’ll give you my perfect painting setlist, music that is wonderful to create to.
