Sheena Aw, alias Caramelaw, è una motion graphics designer, video editor, illustratrice e character designer kawaii di Singapore di giorno, ma c’è chi dice che sia una supereroina a Candyland di notte e noi ci crediamo.
Ha studiato Interactive Media Design presso la Temasek School of Design (Singapore), si è specializzata in animazione, ma si è avventurata in broadcast design quando ha iniziato a lavorare. I suoi clienti, MTV Asia, Sony International e DC Comics, riflettono il suo stile vivace e colorato.
Amiamo moltissimo le sue opere la cui felicità è contagiosa e dove tutti i colori brillanti si mischiano favolosamente insieme creando un’atmosfera unica.

Sheena Aw, aka Caramelaw, is a motion graphics artist, video editor, kawaii illustrator and character designer from Singapore by day, but some people say that she is a Candyland superhero by night and we believe it.
She studied Interactive Media Design in Temasek School of Design (Singapore), she majored in animation but ventured into broadcast design when she started working. Her clients like MTV Asia, Sony International and DC Comics reflect her lively and colorful style.
We really love her works whose happiness is contagious and where all the bright colors go fabulously together creating an unique atmosphere.

• 1. Le tue illustrazioni sono molto fantasiose, da dove trai ispirazione per rappresentare i tuoi mondi kawaii?
  1. Your pictures are very imaginative, what are your inspirations for your kawaii worlds?

Natura, colori, arcobaleno, mostri e tutto ciò che è bizzarro e strano. Più le mie creazioni sono eccentriche, più sono contenta.
Traggo ispirazione da tutti gli eroi dell’arte, come Simone Legno di Tokidoki, Takashi Murakami, Tado, Friends With You e molti altri.

Nature, colours, rainbows, monsters and everything that’s weird or strange. The stranger my creation gets, the happier I am.
I do draw inspirations from my all time art-heros, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Takashi Murakami,Tado, Friends With You and many more.

• 2. Come si è evoluto il tuo stile durante gli anni? Quando hai iniziato a fare illustrazioni digitali si avvicinavano a quello che vediamo adesso?
  2. How has your style evolved over the years? When you started doing digital artwork, did they look like your last works?

Sì, infatti ha avuto un’evoluzione. Non ho sviluppato il mio stile di illustrazione, fino a circa 5 anni fa. Facevo moltissime cose di tutti i generi, come manga e fumetti, ma non mi sentivo legata a quel mondo. Quindi ho iniziato ad esplorare altri campi di illustrazione. Ero molto, molto ispirata da Takashi Murakami e ho cominciato a fare candyart da quel momento. “In my World” è stata la prima illustrazione che direi abbia lo stile Caramelaw. Tutto ciò che ne seguì è storia. :)

Yes Indeed it has. I didn’t develop my style of illustration until about 5 years ago. I was doing a lot of random stuff, like manga and comics but didn’t feel connected with that. Therefore I began exploring other fields of illustration. I was very, very inspired by Takashi Murakami, and began making candyart ever since. “In my World” was the 1st piece of illustration that I would say set off the Caramelaw style. Everything that followed was history. :)

• 3. Le tue illustrazioni sono molto ricche. Come studi la composizione? Sei più istintiva o pianifichi prima nei dettagli elementi e colori?
  3. Your illustrations are very rich. How do you design the composition? Are you instinctive or do you study elements and colors in detail before?

Di solito inizia con un taccuino a portata di mano. Esco, vengo ispirata, scarabocchio, porto a casa il bottino e inizio a fare degli schizzi più costruttivi. Onestamente non ho idea di come saranno i miei lavori quando inizio a realizzare le illustrazioni vettoriali. Prendono vita da soli passo dopo passo. Sono abbastanza istintiva. È affascinante perchè non so mai cosa aspettarmi, ma i risultati sono sempre soddisfacenti.

It usually starts with a handy sketchbook. I go out, I get inspired, scribble them down, bring the treasure home and start to do more constructive sketching. Honestly I have no idea how my artwork would turn out to be when I start making them into vector illustrations. It just takes on a life of its own as I make progress. It’s pretty much instinctive. It’s fascinating because I never know what to expect. But the results are always satisfying.

• 4. In una tua illustrazione ti sei rappresentata come Caramelaw nel Paese delle Meraviglie. Per una volta hai voluto essere protagonista e non solo la creatrice?
  4. In one of your illustration you represented yourself as Caramelaw in Wonderland. Did you want to be the protagonist and not just the creator for once?

È stata realizzata per un concorso organizzato da Wacom e Deviantart. Bisognava rappresentare qualcuno come un personaggio del film “Alice in Wonderland”. Vorrei davvero essere nel Paese delle Meraviglie! Sono una grande fan dei racconti di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, quindi, partecipare a quel concorso è stato un must.

That was for a competition organized by Wacom and Deviantart. To illustrate oneself as one of the characters from the “Alice in Wonderland” movie. Though I do wish I am in Wonderland! I am a big fan of Alice in Wonderland stories. So taking part in this competition was a must.

• 5. Nelle tue opere per te è più importante comunicare te stessa, le tue emozioni e i tuoi valori oppure creare un immaginario che susciti emozioni all’osservatore? Disegni per te stessa o per comunicare con gli altri?
  5. In your works is it more important for you to tell yourself, your emotions and your values, or to create an imaginative world that arouses emotions in observers? Do you draw for yourself or to communicate with others?

Penso che sia molto importante per un artista essere in grado di connettersi con le persone attraverso la loro arte.
Ogni volta che creo arte, spero che porti un sorriso a chi guarda. C’è chi mi dice di sentirsi molto felice quando guarda i miei lavori e questo è il più bel regalo che mi si possa fare. I colori, i personaggi e l’amore che è contenuto in essi. Sono contenta che le persone riescano a sentirlo.

I think it’s very important for an artist to be able to connect with people through their art.
Whenever I create art, I hope it brings a smile to those who look at it. I get people coming up to me telling me they feel very happy when they look at my art and that is the best gift of all. The colors, the characters and the love that is put into it. I’m glad people are able to feel that.

• 6. Sei anche esperta nel customizzare My Little Pony e bambole Pullip. Hai anche creato una nuova “razza”, i Pollips (Pullips + Ponies), ovvero My Little Pony e Pullip abbinati in un set.
  Come è nata la passione per la customizzazione? In qualche modo cerchi di rendere tangibili le tue creazioni?
  6. You are also an expert in customizing My Little Pony and Pullip dolls. You have also created a new “race”, the Pollips (Pullips + Ponies) that are My Little Pony and Pullip combined in a set.
  How did your love for customization start? Do you try to make your creations tangible somehow?

Circa un anno fa mi è venuta la fissa di collezionare le bambole Pullip. Prima di allora non sapevo si potessero personalizzare le Pullip. Poi mi sono imbattuta in queste bellissime bambole Zombuki personalizzate da Brigitte Coovert e mi sono immediatamente innamorata di loro. La combinazione dei colori, la storiella dietro ogni bambola personalizzata. Sono stata MOLTO ispirata. Da allora mi sono buttata e ho iniziato a personalizzare bambole Pullip. Mi sono divertita così tanto in quanto è un campo diverso in cui misurare la mia creatività. Ho poi combinato pony e Pullips, l’unione delle 2 cose che amo di più. L’accoppiata perfetta per me.

I 1st got hooked onto collecting Pullip dolls about a year ago. Back then I never knew one could customize a Pullip doll. Then I came across these beautiful Zombuki dolls customized by Brigitte Coovert and fell instantly in love with them. Their colour combination, their little story behind every customized doll. I was VERY inspired. Ever since I took the plunge and began customizing Pullip dolls. I enjoyed it so much as it is a different platform for me to apply my creativity. By pairing a matching custom pony with the Pullips, it’s a combination of the 2 things I love most. The perfect match to me.

• 7. Cosa ti piaceva fare da bambina? Qual erano i tuoi giocattoli preferiti e cosa sognavi di fare da grande?
  7. What did you like to do as a child? What were your favorite toys and what did you want to be when you grew up?

Ero una grande fan dei Vintage My Little Pony (Mini Pony) da quando ero bambina. I loro colori mi attiravano moltissimo. Ho avuto così tanti pony e playsets e li conservo ancora tutt’oggi. Hanno tutti più o meno la mia stessa età. Credo che siano stati un fattore determinate per il senso che ho sviluppato nell’accostare i colori, tutto grazie ai miei cavallini preferiti! :)

Ero un sognatrice, sin da quando ero piccola. Volevo fare l’avventuriera da grande. Viaggiare per i 7 mari, cavalcare le nuvole e fare lo scivolo sugli arcobaleni. Non capivo il concetto che avevano gli adulti di trovare un’occupazione adeguata e faticare, guadagnare $$$ e fare cose che non amavano. Mia madre pensava che fossi senza speranza ma poi si è resa conto che in me c’è un artista in attesa di mostrare al mondo ciò che è dentro di lei. Amo disegnare e immaginare. Mia mamma mi ha detto che ho iniziato a disegnare su qualunque cosa potessi mettere le mani, compreso il suo quaderno di lavoro. Poi un giorno, ho avuto una folgorazione. Ho detto a mia mamma che volevo essere un’artista e far sorridere le persone con la mia arte. :)

I was a big Vintage My Little Pony fan since I was a kid. Their colours attracted me very much as a child. I had so many ponies and playsets and still kept them till today. They are all about the same age as me now. I believe they were a major factor on why I have such a sense of colour co-ordination so much thanks to my favourite mares! :)

I was a dreamer ever since I was young. I wanted to be an adventurer when I grew up. Set sail in the 7 seas, ride on clouds and slide down rainbows. I didn’t understand the concept of adults having a proper jobs and slogging, earning $$$ & doing things they don’t really like. My mom thought I was hopeless but then she came to realize there’s an artist in me that’s waiting to show the world what she had in her. I love drawing and imagining stuff. My mom told me I started drawing in anything I could possibly put my hands on, including her work notebook. Then one day, it just hit me. I told my mom that I want to be an artist and make people smile with my art. :)

• 8. Nelle tue illustrazioni troviamo spesso dei richiami alla natura. “Trees in Heaven” è un’opera che ci ha molto colpito perchè rappresenta un paradiso popolato dalle piante tagliate sulla terra.
  Cerchi di comunicare anche un messaggio ecologista?
  8. There are often references to nature in your illustrations. “Trees in Heaven” impressed us because it represents a paradise populated by cut plants on earth.
  Have your illustrations an ecology message?

Sono una grande amante della natura. Che si tratti di alberi, animali, fiori, funghi, arcobaleno, gocce di pioggia… qualunque cosa! Svolge un ruolo importante nelle mie creazioni. Amo la bellezza e la perfezione di madre natura. Penso che il mondo dovrebbe imparare dalla sua bellezza e senza dare nulla per scontato. Tendo a riflettere questo concetto nella maggior parte delle mie opere.
“Trees in Heaven” è una delle miei illustrazioni preferite.
L’idea alla base era quella di rappresentare gli alberi felici non sulla Terra, ma fluttuanti sopra le nuvole. In quel mondo gli scoiattoli si prendono cura dei loro bisogni, gli uccelli tengono degli annaffiatoi con le zampe e versano l’acqua sulle radici degli alberi. È come se fosse la loro vita ultraterrena, una visione di ciò che accade agli alberi dopo che vengono tagliati dalle persone. Per tanti anni ci hanno fornito legna, riparo e aria pulita, senza alcuna protesta, meritano di andare in paradiso. Ma ancora, le persone danno la natura per scontata. È un messaggio che i cittadini devono capire. Mi arrabbio molto quando vedo cambiamenti climatici, gli alberi e le foreste abbattuti, perdite petrolifere che uccidono decine di migliaia di animali innocenti, bracconieri che abbattono gli animali a loro vantaggio portando le specie all’estinzione. Fa così male. Non c’è dubbio che la Terra esiste da così tanto tempo, col ritmo in cui noi esseri umani diamo sempre più cose per scontate, non ci sarà più una casa per noi. Inutile dire nemmeno per i nostri figli e per il loro futuro.

I’m a big nature lover. Be it trees, animals, flowers, mushrooms, rainbows, raindrops…anything! It plays a big part in my art creations. I love how beautiful and perfect mother nature is. I think the world should learn from its beauty and not take anything on earth for granted. I tend to reflect that in most of my artwork.
“Trees in Heaven” is one of my favourite pieces of art.
The idea behind it was to feature happy looking trees not on earth but floating above on clouds. In that world, Squirrels tend to their needs, birds with watering cans attached to their feet water the trees. It’s like an afterlife, a view of what happens to trees after people chop them down. For so many years they provided us with wood, shelter and clean air with no complaints, they deserve to go to heaven. But yet, people are still taking nature for granted. It’s a message that people need to understand. I get very upset when I see climate changes, trees and forest being chopped down, oil spills killing tens and thousands of innocent animals, poachers killing animals to their advantage driving their species into extinction. It hurts so much. No doubt the earth has been around for us for so long but at the rate we humans are taking things for granted, there isn’t going to be a home for us any more. Needless to say, our children and their future.

• 9. Qual è stato il complimento più bello che hai ricevuto e qual è stata la tua più grande soddisfazione finora?
  9. What has been the best compliment you’ve got and what has been your greatest satisfaction so far?

Ho preso parte alla Singapore Toy, Comic and Games Convention 2010 (STGCC 2010). Avevo un piccolo stand in mostra dove c’erano i miei lavori e le mie bambole customizzate. Molte persone sono venute chiedendomi l’autografo e di scattare una foto, mi dicevano di essere miei grandi fan. È stato davvero incredibile. Non avrei mai creduto di avere dei fans!

Ma l’evento più sorprendente è stato quando Simone Legno di Tokidoki ha lasciato il suo stand per farmi visita. Tre anni fa, io ero lì a parlare con lui di fare quello che fa. 3 anni dopo, era al mio stand, guardava i miei lavori e mi diceva che ero molto migliorata ed era molto felice per me che fossi arrivata fino a quel punto. Ero così impressionata e commossa che passato di lì solo per dire ciao. Simone ha mostrato la sua gentilezza e la modestia da artista famoso ed è un ricordo che terrò per sempre nella mia mente e nel mio cuore. :)

I took part in this 2010’s Singapore Toy, Comic and Games Convention (STGCC 2010). Had a tiny booth there showcasing my work and dolls/customs. Many people came up to me asking for autographs and photos taken and telling me they are big fans. That was really incredible. I never knew I had fans!

But the most surprising event was, Simone Legno of Tokidoki dropped by the booth to visit me. 3 years ago, I was there talking to him about doing what he does. 3 years later, he was at my booth, looking at my art and telling me I have improved so much and he’s very happy for me that I have gone this far. I was star-strucked and deeply touched that he dropped by just to say hi. Simone had showed me kindness and modesty as a famed artist and I will forever keep that in mind and in my heart. :)

• 10. Domanda sul futuro: a quali progetti stai lavorando e quali sono i tuoi sogni nel cassetto?
  10. Are you working on some projects? What are your dreams?

Sì ci sono. Sto avviando il mio negozio su Etsy e sto vendendo alcuni dei miei gadget e toy customizzati. Sto programmando alcune illustazioni da freelance così da finanziare più gadget in futuro. Sto anche cercando di avvicinarmi a dei grandi brand per delle collaborazioni. Stanno accadendo moltissime cose e vorrei sdoppiarmi! :p

Il mio sogno sarebbe quello di produrre brevi animazioni con i miei personaggi e avere la possibilità di progettare per dei brand, come Fafi ha fatto per M.A.C. Vorrei essere il Tokidoki / Takashi Murakami di Singapore. :)

Yes indeed I am. Just set up my Etsy store and selling some of my merchandise and custom toys. Planning to take on a few more illustration freelance jobs so fund for more merchandises in the future. Also trying to approach a few large brands into a possible collaboration. Many things happening and I wished I had doubles of me! :p

My dream would be producing short animations with my characters and designing for a brand name
as Fafi has done for M.A.C. I wish to be Singapore’s very own Tokidoki/Takashi Murakami. :)
