Yulia Brodskaya (1983 - Mosca) è una giovane artista che ha portato una ventata di innovazione nel mondo della pubblicità, grazie alle sue delicate composizioni di carta (arte chiamata “quilling“).
Moltissimi brand hanno deciso di comunicare attraverso le colorate strisce di carta, arricciate e fissate una ad una da Yulia, che nonostante il suo grande interesse e gli studi di grafica, invece di rivolgersi al digitale ha deciso di tradurre il suo lavoro nell’ambito della artigianalià.
Ecco l’interessante intervista che ci ha rilasciato.

Yulia Brodskaya (1983 - Moscow) is a young artist who has brought a wave of innovation in the advertising world, with her delicate paper compositions (this art is called “quilling“).
Many brands decided to communicate through the colorful strips of paper, curled and fixed one by one by Yulia, who despite her great interest and her study of graphic art, instead of using digital art, she has decided to express her work into craft.
Here is the interesting interview that she gave us.

• 1. Qual è il processo necessario per realizzare le tue sculture di carta?
  What is the necessary process to make your paper sculptures?

Comincio con schizzi e bozze, questo è un passaggio molto importante perché una volta che ho incollato un pezzo di carta non posso rimuoverlo (si spera che la colla sia fortemente adesiva), quindi non c’è spazio per errori e ho bisogno di avere un’idea molto chiara su quello che sto facendo dall’inizio. Tuttavia c’è sempre spazio per gli esperimenti con la carta vera e propria, perché a volte è difficile capire che cosa va bene prima di iniziare fisicamente il lavoro con la carta.

I begin with sketches and roughs, this is a very important stage because once I glued a piece of paper I can’t remove it (the glue is supposed to be strongly adhesive), thus there is no place for errors and I need to have a very clear idea about what I’m doing from the beginning. However there is always room for experiments with the actual paper, because sometimes it is difficult to see what will look good before starting the physical paper work.

• 2. I tuoi lavori sono raffinati e precisi, è la carta che ti permette grande accuratezza nei dettagli oppure sei tu che gestisci bene eventuali limiti che insorgono in fase di realizzazione?
  Your works are refined and precise, does paper allow you a great accuracy in detail, or do you manage well any limit which arises n progress?

Ci sono alcune limitazioni quando si usa questa cartotecnica artigianale; per esempio, è molto difficile creare oggetti piccoli come lettere minuscole o graziati (serif). Una corretta illuminazione durante il servizio fotografico aiuta a nascondere le imprecisioni di poco evidenti. Ma alla fine questo è un lavoro fatto a mano, se si vuole un’immagine perfetta ed impeccabile, bisognerebbe rivolgersi all’arte digitale.

There are some limitation when using this paper craft technique; for instance it is very difficult to create small objects such as small letters or serifs. Proper lighting during the photo shoot helps to hide minor inaccuracies. But in the end of the day this is a hand-made work, if someone wants a perfect flawless image, they should go for digital art.

• 3. Nei tuoi lavori è molto importante la scelta della carta e dei colori. Quanto impieghi a scegliere ill giusto materiale? Ti è mai capitato di dover colorare tu stessa i fogli per non aver trovato la giusta tonalità?
  In your work is very important to choose paper and colors. How long does it takes you to choose the right material? Have you ever coloured the sheets by yourself if you don’t find the right shade?

Ho una vasta collezione di carte, la decisione dura di solito pochi minuti. Non ho mai colorato i fogli di carta prima, ma è una cosa che potrei provare a fare un giorno.

I have a vast collection of papers, the decision usually takes minutes. I’ve never colorized the sheets of paper before, but this is something I might try doing one day.

• 4. Per realizzare le tue opere ci vuole pazienza e concentrazione. Ascolti della musica mentre realizzi le tue opere oppure hai bisogno di silenzio assoluto?
  It is necessary patience and concentration to make your works. Do you listen to music while you are realizing your sculptures or do you need complete silence?

• 5. Qual è o quali sono i lavori che ti hanno maggiormente messo alla prova?
  What have been your most challenging works?

Il progetto Cadbury, l’illustrazione “Instant” per Starbucks; anche tutte le opere con consegne molto brevi.

• 6. Le tue sculture di carta sono affascinati anche perchè rivelano un senso di fragilità intrinseca nel materiale usato. Qual è il modo migliore di conservarle una volta terminate?
  Your paper sculptures are fascinating also because they reveal a sense of fragility inherent in the material used. What is the best way to keep them when they are completed?

Io li conservo stesi e coperti dalla polvere. In realtà non faccio questo tipo di lavoro da un periodo sufficiente per sapere il modo migliore per preservare le opere d’arte, credo che ci vogliano anni per impararlo - grazie all’esperienza. Apprezzerei dei consigli da chi abbia già avuto questa esperienza.

I store them lying flat and covered from dust. Actually I haven’t been doing this type of work for long enough to know the best method of preserving the artworks, I suppose you would need years to learn such things - all by experience. I would appreciate any advice from someone who has got such experience.

• 7. Quanto influisce la qualità della fotografie e il gioco di ombre tra le strisce di carta, nel risultato finale dell’opera?
  How much do the photography and the play of shadows of the strips of paper affect the final result?

La fotografia svolge un ruolo cruciale nel processo del lavoro, l’impatto di un’opera di carta dipende dalla qualità della fotografia: le luci possono determinare il successo o l’insuccesso di un’immagine. Non deve necessariamente essere complessa, ma la luce ha bisogno di un attento controllo di direzione, intensità e il livello di morbidezza.

Photography plays a crucial role in the working process, paper craft depends on skilful photography for its impact: lighting the work can make or break the success of the image. It need not necessarily be complex; however the light needs careful control in direction, intensity and the level of softness.

• 8. Nelle tue opere traspare calma, gioia, serenità. Credi che sia dovuto al mezzo che usi o piuttosto alla tua personalità che emerge inconsciamente?
  Your works show calm, joy and serenity. Do you think that it depends on the material that you use or rather on your personality that come out unconsciously?

Penso che tutte le cose elencate siano molto soggettive; sono sicura che i miei lavori possano comunicare cose diverse a seconda di chi le guarda. Il materiale e la tecnica in una certa misura determinano il disegno, ma credo che ci siano ancora moltissime cose che possano ancora essere fatte.

I think all the things listed are quite subjective; I’m sure my works might communicate different things to different people. The material and technique dictate the designs to some extent, but I believe there are lot’s and lot’s of thing that can still be done.

• 9. I tuoi lavori colpiscono senza essere volgari o scioccare le persone.
  Pensi che sia per questo motivo che le tue opere siano state molto richieste per la pubblicità?
  Your works impress people without being vulgar or without shocking them.
  Do you think that it is for this reason that your works have been successful in advertising?

Non credo che questa sia la ragione; sono sicura che c’è una quantità enorme di altre immagini e stili che colpiscono le persone, senza essere scioccanti ecc. Per rispondere alla domanda perché il mio lavoro ha successo: credo che sia anche perché sembra che ci sia “fame” di “cose reali”, fatte a mano, anche se è solo una riproduzione in fotografia. Il lavoro che faccio è molto intenso e necessita davvero di molto tempo, credo che le persone lo apprezzino.

I don’t think this is the reason; I’m sure there is a huge amount of other images and styles that impress people without being shocking etc. To answer the question why my work is successful; I believe it is partly because there seems to be a ‘hunger’ for the ‘real’, hand-made things, even if it is only a reproduction achieved through photography. The work that I do is labor-intensive and really time consuming, I think people appreciate this.

• 10. Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?
  What are your future plans?
