Planet 51 - The Cast

Il Kawaii Team, con la partecipazione straordinaria di Fulvio, settimana scorsa si è recato subito al cinema a vedere Planet 51, film d’animazione prodotto da Ilion Animation Studios, casa produttrice madrilena e dalla britannica HandMade Films e il film più costoso nella storia cinematografica spagnola (60 milioni di dollari).

The Kawaii Team, with the extraordinary participation of Fulvio, went straight to the cinema to see Planet 51  last week, the animated movie produced by Ilion Animation Studios from Madrid and the UK HandMade Films and it was the most expensive movie in Spanish cinema history (60 million dollars).

Planet 51 - Chuck, Lem, Skiff, Neera, Eckle

La storia narra di un astronauta, Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker, che dopo aver ricevuto le immagini rassicuranti dalla sonda Rover che fotografavano un pianeta desertico e disabitato, atterra e scopre che si trova in una dimesione “aliena” degli anni 50. La piccola sonda Rover era decisamente più attratta dai soggetti inanimati e possibilmente dalle rocce, sua grande passione.
Chuck si ritrova così a fuggire perchè è lui l’alieno tanto temuto dagli abitanti di Planet 51, ma verrà aiutato dagli adolescenti Lem e Skiff e il piccolo Eckle per riconquistare la sua astronave e tornare sulla Terra.

The story tells of an astronaut, Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker, who after receiving the reassuring images from the space probe Rover which shot a desert planet and uninhabited, lands and discovers that he is in a kind of ”alien” dimension in the 50s. The small probe Rover was much more attracted to inanimate subjects and particularly to the rocks, its great passion.
So Chuck has to find a way to escape because he is the alien so feared by the inhabitants of Planet 51, but he will be helped by the teenagers Lem and Skiff and the little Eckle to regain his spaceship and return to Earth.

Un punto forte del film sono i continui riferimenti ai film di fantascienza che gli amanti del genere si divertiranno a scovare.
Per chi non è molto ferrato sull’argomento o ha già visto il film senza cogliere tutti i particolari, Wikipedia offre un elenco completo e qui ripropongo alcuni punti:

• Il “cagnolino” assomiglia alla creatura di Alien.
• La pipì del cagnolino è acida come il sangue delle creature in Alien.
• Il nome dell’assistente dell’astronauta Baker, “Rover”, si riferisce alla alla sonda “Mars rover”, a cui assomiglia.
• L’astronauta Baker sbatte contro un ciclista e fa un volo passando sullo sfondo di una luna piena. È un omaggio ad una scena simile in E.T. l’Extra-Terrestre. La trama del film è stata descritta come un E.T. al contrario.
• Ci sono continui giochi di parole e battute sul controllo alieno della mente, cosa che succede nel film l’invasione degli Ultracorpi (1956).
• Durante il film gli abitanti del pianeta credono che l’alieno-umano stia trasformando tutti in zombie. Nel film Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), gli estraterrestri arrivano sulla Terra con il “Piano 9″ di trasformare gli umani in zombie.
• Il nome del film si riferisce all’Area 51, in cui si dice che si trovino i resti degli UFO in collisione sulla Terra.

The strong spots of the movie are the constant references to science fiction and the lovers of this genre will enjoy to find them.
Who is not so much interested in the subject or has already seen the movie without finding all the details, Wikipedia offers a complete list and here we write some points:

• The pet resembles the creature from Alien.
• The pet’s urine is acidic as is the alien’s blood in Alien.
• The name of astronaut Baker’s robot assistant, “Rover”, is a reference to the Mars rover, which it resembles.
• Astronaut Baker collides with a bicycle rider and flies through the air past a background shot of the full moon. The shot is an homage to a similar image in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The film’s plot has been described as a reverse-ET.
• There are frequent running jokes about alien mind control, as in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).
• Through out the movie they have the impression that the alien is going to turn everyone into zombies. In the movie Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), the extraterrestrials come to Earth with the “Plan 9″ to turn humans into zombies.
• The name of the film refers to Area 51, an area rumored to contain crashed UFOs.

Un film d’animazione per bambini, ben fatto e divertente, che si discosta dal trend del momento in cui i film animati puntano ad un pubblico più adulto.
Geniali sono i numerosissimi rimandi ad altri film cult, primo fra tutti Alien. Sono andata al cinema a vederlo esclusivamente per il cagnolino simil Alien: una creatura mostruosa e terrificante che qui diventa un animale da compagnia, il miglior amico dell’uomo, ops, dell’alieno! Ma chi sono gli alieni? E chi sono gli umani? Questo film lancia messaggi contro il razzismo e cerca di dirci che siamo tutti uguali, sia che siamo bianchi o verdi.

An animated movie for children, well made and entertaining, which moves away from the trend of the time when animated movies aim at adults.
The numerous references to other cult films are brilliant, first of all to Alien. I went to the cinema only to watch the pet Alien: a monstrous and terrifying creature that here becomes a pet, man’s best friend, ops, alien’s best friend! But who are the aliens? And who are the humans? This film launches anti-racism messages and tries to tell us that we are all equal, whether we are white or green.

Dal Trailer mi aspettavo un film per un target intermedio, invece è dichiaratamente per i bimbi soprattutto nella trama: buoni sentimenti, l’amicizia, il calore della famiglia, l’accettazione di chi è diverso.
Gli adulti si possono divertire a trovare i rimandi agli anni 50 e alla science fiction che elevano l’atmosfera come solo le citazioni a predecessori cult riescono a ricreare.
In generale il film mi è piaciuto e l’ho trovato divertente, le scenografie sono molto simpatiche e i personaggi espressivi. ma non mi ha entusiasmato o emozionato, insomma si attesta nella media.
Se volete portare i vostri bimbi al cinema sicuramente è una buona scelta.

When i watch the trailer I expected a movie for an intermediate target, but it is avowedly for children especially in the plot: good feelings, friendship, the warmth of family, acceptance of those who are different from us.
The adults will be amused to find the references to the 50s and to the science fiction that elevate the atmosphere that only quotes from cult predecessors can recreate.
In general I liked the movie and it was funny, the scenes are very funny and the characters expressive. but I was not enthusiastic or excited, in fact is in a mid-range.
If you want to bring your kids to the cinema is definitely a good choice.

Voglio dare il mio personale commento sul film in tre punti:
1. Trama: la trama è molto adatta ai più piccoli e tratta di un argomento sempre attuale e che risponde ad una semplice domanda: “Se siamo noi ad essere diversi?”.
La storia è molto semplice e bella con happy ending finale degno dei film disney.
2. Grafica: quattro anni di lavorazione e film più costoso realizzato in Spagna. Un solo commento: grandissimo lavoro! Bellissima grafica, dai personaggi agli sfondi! Tutto veramente bello!
3. Ambientazione: tutto stile anni ‘50. Geniale! Sicuramente voluto, ma vedere la tipica famiglia aliena anni ‘50 secondo me è stupendo. (Barbecue con hamburger in giardino!)
Commento finale: bellissimo! Da andare a vedere!
PS: il mio personaggio preferito è Rover!

I want to leave my personal comment about the film by making three points:
1. Plot: The plot is very suitable for children and is a subject that is always topical and responds to a simple question: “And if are we to be different?”.
The story is very simple and beautiful with a happy ending worthy of a typical Disney movie.
2. Graphics: four years of work and the most expensive movie made in Spain. One comment: great job! Beautiful graphics, characters and backgrounds! Everything is really nice!
3. Setting: All 50s style. Brilliant! Certainly wanted, but see the typical 50s alien family to me, is amazing. (Barbecue with hamburgers in the garden!)
Final Comment: beautiful! Must see!
PS: My favorite character is Rover!
