Ma in che modo i manga influenzano l’arte contemporanea?

“Micropop & Nipponsuggestioni: un concept che esplora l’arte contemporanea europea contaminata fortemente dalle icone manga e dalle anime giapponesi.
A distanza di un secolo e mezzo più o meno dalla grande fascinazione subita da artisti, del calibro di Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Renoir e chi più ne ha più ne metta, da parte delle stampe ukiyo-e, prese dal periodo Edo per impacchettare le porcellane durante il periodo dell’esotismo francese, quest’arte ritorna a fascinare in modo indelebile, inesorabile, l’immaginario dei creativi e degli artisti occidentali.
È così che nasce il concept Micropop & Nipponsuggestioni.

“Micropop & Nipponsuggestions: a concept that explores the contemporary European art heavily influenced by Japanese anime and manga icons.
After about 150 years, when artists, like Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Renoir and many more, were under a spell of ukiyo-e print, taken from the Edo period to pack the porcelainware during the age of French exoticism, this art comes back to charm indelibly and inexorably the imagination of the western artists.
Thus the concept of Micropop & Nipponsuggestions was born.

Francesco De Molfetta, che è uno degli scultori italiani emergenti più quotati e più collezionati, ha creato un’opera ad hoc per la mostra: un “Gold-Rake“. Conta molto il gioco di parole, come vedete questo omino minuscolo sta finendo di verniciare Goldrake d’oro.
Goldrake di Go Nagai, colui che ha influenzato l’immaginario delle generazioni dei nati agli inizi degli anni 70 in modo assolutamente indelebile.

De Molfetta, who is one of the most highly-rated and sought-after of Italian emerging sculptors, has made a piece for this exhibition: a “Gold-Rake” (the italian name of “Grendizer”). There is a wordplay, as you can see, there is a tiny little man that has almost finished painting a gold Goldrake.
Go Nagai’s Grendizer, who has influenced indelibly the imagery of the 70’s generation.

E infatti anche Marco Cerutti riprende Goldrake in un’opera chiamata “Air Back Again“. Goldrake di nuovo ripreso, però a Ginza, una delle piazze più centrali e importanti del fashion tokyoita di una megalopoli assunta, dove tranquillamente potresti ambientare “Blade Runner” di Ridley Scott. Oppure riprende Shibuya con dei caratteri manga, perchè la tradizione della pittura italiana paesaggista si riposiziona e va in Giappone. Quindi la pittura paesaggistica italiana olio su tela, invece di riprendere i canali di Venezia, Roma, Milano, le città archiettoniche, va lì perchè subisce una fascinazione forte dalle insegne luminose, dalle icone, dai video, da tutto ciò che è marketing; pubblicità e comunicazione che ora entrano a far parte dell’arte.

In fact Marco Cerutti paints Grendizer in a work called “Air Back Again“. Here Grendizer is in Ginza, one of the most central and important squares of the Tokyo fashion area, where you could easily set “Blade Runner” by Ridley Scott. Here too is Shibuya with manga characters, the Italian tradition of landscape art finds a new place and goes to Japan. So the Italian landscape art oil on canvas, instead of representing the Venice canals, Rome, Milan, the architectural cities, goes there because it is fascinated by neon signs, icons, videos, marketing; now advertising and communication are part of art.

Se guardiamo Tomoko Nagao, un’artista assolutamente Micropop e crossmediale, una delle più importanti artiste Micropop presenti in Italia, possiamo vedere come questa influenza sia molto forte. Tomoko lavora con le animazioni, con i vestiti per bambini, con i quadri, con le sculture in vetroresina e quindi lavora con un multicanale e un multilinguaggio riappropriandosi di quel Macropop che è Hello Kitty, i massmanga e i massproduction che l’hanno inondata di desideri nella sua generazione quando era bambina. Tomoko è del 1975 e guarda caso Hello Kitty nasce nel novembre del 1974 e viene lanciata in Giappone. Il micropop si riappropria di quello che è il macropop di massa per esprimere invece i desideri, i propri sogni, i bisogni.

Tomoko Nagao, a true micropop and cross-medial artist, is one of the most important micropop artists in Italy, we can see how this influence is very strong. Tomoko works with animation, clothes for children and paintings, with fiberglass sculptures (which non solo Kawaii has seen and reviewed them) and then she works through a multi-channel and a multi-language, reinterpreting that Macropop represented by Hello Kitty, massmanga and massproduction that flooded her generation with childhood dreams. Tomoko was born in 1975 and Hello Kitty in November 1974 and it was launched in Japan. Micropop reinterprets mass macropop to express desires, dreams and needs.

E infatti c’è Aya Takano che nientemeno lavora nella Factory di Murakami. Takashi Murakami ha disegnato le borse Louis Vuitton, la Nissan Pivo, Inochi… Ha fatto tutta una serie di passaggi che rendono l’arte non solo arte, ma marketing, immagine, comunicazione integrata, praticamente l’avverarsi della profezia di Andy Warhol.

Aya Takano works in no less than Murakami Factory. Takashi Murakami has designed Louis Vuitton handbags, the Nissan Pivo, Inochi… He has made a series of steps that make art not only art, but marketing, image, integrated communication, in short the fulfillment of the Andy Warhol’s prophecy.

Invece Mot8 è il più grande esponente di street culture che abbiamo in Italia proveniente dal Giappone. Le street culture giapponesi sono come quelle americane, inglesi, francesi, olandesi, ma la loro differenza è che prendono dai manga. Queste figure non prendono da Blu come tanti dicono qui in Italia, ma da un manga capolavoro che è Tekkon Kinkreet, scritto durante gli anni 70 da un mangaka della generazione otaku, la stessa generazione che ha dato ispirazione a Murakami e a Nara, i grandi maestri del Superflat che dopo di loro hanno creato la generazione Micropop.

Instead Mot8 is the greatest exponent of the street culture that lives in Italy, and he comes from Japan. The Japanese street culture resembles the American, the British, the French and the Dutch one, but the difference is that it draws its inspiration from manga.
These subjects are not inspired by Blu like many people say here in Italy, but they are inspired by a manga masterpiece, Tekkon Kinkreet, written during the 70’s by a mangaka from the otaku generation, the same generation that has inspired Murakami and Nara, the great Superflat masters, that after them, they have created the Micropop generation.

Kukula, che è nata in Israele e vive e opera negli Stati Uniti, ma è una superstar internazionale, è rimasta fortemente affascinata dall’immaginario Micropop manga. Lei è una grande fan di Aya Takano, è per quello che ho collocato vicino i loro quadri.
Kukula esprime un sentimento estremamente femminile: solo una ragazza potrebbe fare un’opera così perchè un’opera di questo tipo colloca le sue radici nell’immaginario pop manga degli anni 70-80, ma è anche vero che lo rielabora dando un’identità, una dignità, una personalità ai suoi personaggi.
Aya Takano e Kukula, nonostante siano cresciute in mondi e nazionalità diverse, come il Giappone e Israele, sono estrememente connesse.

Kukula, who was born in Israel and lives and works in the U.S., is a International superstar and she has been highly fascinated by the Micropop manga imagery. She is a big Aya Takano’s fan, for this reason I have placed their paintings side by side.
Kukula expresses an ultra-feminine feeling: only a girl could make a work like this, because this kind of work has its root in the manga pop imagery of the 70’s and 80’s, but it is also true that she has enhanced it by giving an identity, a dignity, a personality to her characters.
Aya Takano and Kukula, despite they grew up in different worlds and nationality, as Japan and Israel, are highly related.

Marcel Dzama ha la capacità di realizzare in modo estremamente pop e kawaii, come questo gatto, il pupazzetto, l’infermiere, il coniglietto col fungo, ma congelandole: le congela perchè è nato in Canada. Il ghiaccio appartiene al suo immaginario, raffreddando queste storie per l’infanzia molto calde, suggestive e paurose, riesce a dargli invece quella leggerezza e capacità di trasmettere senzazioni leggere molto enjoyable tipiche dell’arte kawaii. Per questo motivo l’ho definito “Ice Pop“.

Marcel Dzama has the ability to represent things in a extremely kawaii way, like this cat, a puppet, a nurse, a bunny with a mushroom, but freezes them, thanks to his Canadian background. Ice belongs to his imagery, cooling these children’s stories that are very warm, suggestive and scary, he can give them a lightness and the ability to convey enjoyable feelings typical of kawaii art. For this reason I have called this “Ice Pop“.

Nicoz Balboa è una bravissima artista nata in Italia e trasferitasi a Parigi.
Come nella opere di Tomoko Nagao, ritornano gli animali guida per far sì che si contestualizzi l’immagine di una girl sensibile ma anche gothic lolita. In Giappone, e nelle piazze di Akihabara o Shibuya, vanno i cosplay e si vedono questi grandi movimenti gothic lolita. Questo modo di mettere gli animal guide e le gothic lolita è sicuramente connesso con le Micropop.

Nicoz Balboa is a talented artist born in Italy and who has moved to Paris.
Like Tomoko Nagao’s works, there is the animal guide to contextualize the image of a sensitive girl but also gothic lolita.
In Japan, Akihabara or Shibuya squares are filled with cosplayers and it’s possible to see these wide gothic lolita movements. This way of connecting the animal guide with the Gothic Lolita is definitely related to Micropop.

Giuseppe Veneziano fa un omaggio con La Rosa di Versailles. Lady Oscar, l’eroina che ha vissuto alla corte di Francia, tra le spine delle rose: un po’ collegato al fetish di Nicoz Balboa, ci suggerisce un immaginario pop manga ironico che un artista come Veneziano coltiva da anni, avendo fatto delle icone pop un’arte.

Giuseppe Veneziano pays tribute to The Rose of Versailles. Lady Oscar, the heroine who lived at the court of France, surrounded by the thorns of the roses: slightly connected to Nicoz Balboa’s fetish, it suggests a pop manga and ironic imagery that an artist like Veneziano has cultivated for years, turning pop icons into art.

Andy è un musicista e un artista multimediale e crossmediale, inserisce il video nelle opere ed è soprattutto suggestionato da tutto ciò che è icona pop anni 80. Utilizza il fluo perchè la fluoresceza era il colore degli anni 80: Andy Warhol andò alla Scala con un calzino verde fluo e giallo fluo. A partire dalla scelta cromatica, fino ad arrivare a quello che sono le scelte dei soggetti, un artista come Andy è assolutamente coerente con una mostra come Micropop & Nipponsuggestioni, e ce lo dimostra la presenza di Lupin III, di Fujiko e di Mazinga.
A proposito di Lupin III, vale la pena sottolineare che il lungometraggio Il Castello di Cagliostro è stato disegnato dal grande maestro sensei Hayao Miyazaki.

Andy is a musician and a multimedial and cross-medial artist, he inserts videos into his works and he is primarily influenced by all the 80’s pop icons. He uses fluorescent colors of the 80’s: Andy Warhol went to La Scala theatre with a fluorescent green sock and a fluorescent yellow sock. From the choice of the colour to the choices of the subjects, an artist like Andy is absolutely consistent with  Micropop & Nipponsuggestions, as it is shown by the presence of Lupin III, Fujiko and Mazinger.
Speaking about Lupin III, it is worth emphasizing that The Castle of Cagliostro full-length film was designed by the great master Hayao Miyazaki sensei.

Veneziano ha realizzato semplicemente con un’opera, quello che è l’immaginario che tutti noi abbiamo avuto da bambini: cioè Terence che tocca il sedere a Candy Candy. Abbiamo aspettato puntate e puntate su Telereporter ma ciò non è mai accaduto, ma l’arte che ne possiede gli strumenti può avverare i sogni.
Ed ecco qua che Lamù-chan, proveniente dallo spazio, grande diva delle culture pop giapponesi, si presenta nella sua bellezza e sensualità più assoluta. Lamù è nell’ambito degli anime una superstar. Il fratello di Lamù si chiama Ten, “proveniente dal cielo”, che guarda caso è il nome di mio figlio.

Veneziano (who is there and is hidding) made simply through a work, what is our imagery when we were children: that is Terence who is touching Candy Candy bottom. We have waited many episodes but it has never happened, but art has the tools to make dreams come true.
And here is Lum-chan, from the space, the great diva of Japanese pop culture, in her absolute beauty and sensuality. Lum is a superstar of the anime world. Lum’s brother is called Ten, “coming from the sky”, which incidentally is the name of my son.

Un cerchio che si chiude nella curatela che ho voluto dare a questa esibizione che mostra come gli artisti occidentali, da Megaloman a Micky Mouse, da Lupin III alle gothic lolita, dalla street art ai manga, dal kawaii a Murakami, e soprattutto Alex Gross, uno dei fondatori del Pop Surrealismo internazionale tra i più quotati al mondo, hanno subito quell’influenza a livello di immaginario dato dalle icone pop giapponesi.

I have wanted to close the loop in curatorship of this exhibition, which shows how Western artists, from Megaloman to Mickey Mouse, from Lupin III to gothic lolita, from street art to manga, form kawaii to Murakami and especially to Alex Gross, one of the founders of the International Pop Surrealism and one of the most highly-rated in the world, were influenced by the Japanese pop icon at the level of imaginary.
