Samurai Wars: Star Wars in Edo

9 Luglio 2010 no comment

The charm of some stories comes from their contexts and if they are moved to another place and another time, they lose all the magic… but it’s not true for every story!
Steve Bialik, a New York illustrator, has challenged all the Star Wars addicted and he has moved the events in a very surprising place: the Japanese Edo period.
The result is truly a masterpiece of fantasy and irony, illustrated in Ukiyoe style.
The two eras are perfectly integrated, the typical Japanese elements, geisha, samurai, kamon and feudal palaces and backgrounds go well with modern reinterpreted elements like Darth Vader mask or the Lightsaber handle taken from a katana.

  • Yoda > Kappa (creature mitologiche giapponesi)
  • Darth Vader > Demone del teatro Nō.
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi > monaco Zen
  • Chewbacca > Oni (demone)
  • Jabba The Hutt > rospo gigante (creature mitologiche)
  • Ammiraglio Ackbar > Kraken (creatura mitologica, polpo gigante)
  • Boba Fett > Samurai
  • D3BO e C1P8 > androidi meno evoluti

Every character is recognizable and at the same time is perfectly consistent with the Edo period:

  • Princess Leia > Edo Princess
  • Princess Leia with Jabba the Hutt > Geisha
  • Han Solo > Samurai
  • Yoda> Kappa (Japanese mythological creatures)
  • Darth Vader > Demon of Noh theater.
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi > Zen Monk
  • Chewbacca > Oni (demon)
  • Jabba the Hutt > giant toad (mythological creatures)
  • Admiral Ackbar > Kraken (mythological creature, a giant octopus)
  • Emperor Palpatine> he wears kumadori makeup of Kabuki, for powerful men
  • Boba Fett > Samurai
  • D3BO and C1P8> androids less evolved

Bialik makes some characters even more intense like Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt, who are really more threatening in these illustrations than in the movie saga, while Admiral Ackbar suits better with samurai outfit than his white overalls.
It is interesting to notice that Princess Leia is represented as a Edo princess, but when she wears a sexy outifit with Jabba the Hutt in the film, Bialik represents her as a Geisha.
