It was opened on October 20, but officially to the public on 21 the exhibition “Shunga, Art and Eros in Japan during the Edo period”, housed at Palazzo Reale and in a worthwhile collaboration with Fondazione Mazzotta, as it was made successfully for the exhibition “Samurai”.

Shunga 春画 literally “picture of spring” are erotic prints which have seen their maximum circulation during the Tokugawa shogunate (1603 - 1868), and are part of the imaginary of Ukiyo-e (浮世絵 “pictures of the floating world”) which had been made a wonderful exhibition at Palazzo Reale in 2004 and it housed only a small section of Shunga prints shielded by screens.

Five years later we see an exhibition completely dedicated to this art born from the need of the wealthy middle-class Japanese which wanted to break free from the neo-confucian rigidity of Samurai, who held political power, wanted to enjoy the pleasures of life and the arts.

The Shunga prints were much appreciated by the contemporaries, they were also used to illustrate erotic novels and vademecum for young wives and courtesans, but there was a period in which they were considered only pornographic images, in spite of their high artistic value that is rightly acknowledged nowadays.
In the rooms we can find also a little exhibition of kimono and under-kimono, this one comparable to underwear.

The exhibition was organized, according to a coherence of subjects and historical period in four sections plus an extra:
1. 1700 - 1760, here we can find the “poetics of the pillow”, the principle of dream, the archetype of the Action, the swan-maiden to be conquered with great efforts.
2. 1760 - 1790, the protagonists are Harunobu and Koryusai who represented the delicacy and the elegance, where women become the perfect aesthetic ideals, porcelain dolls, fairy-women, angelic beings.
3. 1790 - 1820, we can see the psychological research of the love of Utamaro and his contemporaries, where there are impudent double entendre and the carnality is more present than in the works of their predecessors, the Thought manifests itself in the opposition between the conscious and unconscious.
4. 1820 - about 1900, here love becomes tender and provocative and sometimes rage, the woman is a snake that speaks with a human voice, is sweet and provocative and she is subject to an aggressive and sadistic eroticism which have ventured artists like Hokusai, Kunisada and Kuniyoshi.
5. Mini-extra section dedicated to a comparison between the Shunga and erotic and pornographic manga, the hentai. (This section, censured at Palazzo Reale, has been moved to Yamato Video Shop, via Tadino 5, Milan, from November 14).

The Kawaii Team on October 30 was there, and here are our impressions of the exhibition:

Angela

Despite the subject is seen by many people as vulgar, the prints on display at this exhibition emanates harmony and beauty. White skin tones, decorated clothes and shades used immerse us in a dream and not make us feel ashamed to look at them. Are pure art.
The protagonists of this erotic imaginary are not nudes as it could be expected, but most of them have just their sex bared. The kimono colour scenes and, in the exhibition, it’s possible to admire some of them in person.
The comparison is immediate between the exhibition Samurai and Shunga, war and love, the hardness of man and the delicacy of the woman.

The exhibition is very rich: there are 100 works made by the technique of polychrome xylography, 30 original books and some valuable kimono and under-kimono.
The path is very interesting because it shows the evolution of the genre during the years by the most representative artists until the western influences around 1900.
Certainly deserves to be seen, even because at Palzzo Reale and more generally in Italy there are not often exhibitions that will make happy all the lovers of the Orient.
Unfortunately I could not see the last room, where there were hentai manga, because it will be opened on November 14 at Yamato Video, but however i came back home very satisfied.
