Non Solo Kawaii

La mostra “Shunga e manga Arte ed Eros nel Giappone del periodo Edo e nei fumetti e disegni animati dell’attuale era Heisei” si compone di tre sezioni.
1. I manga e gli anime eredi degli ukiyo-e.
2. Cenni di storia dei manga e anime erotici in Giappone.
Le opere e gli autori di maggior rilievo per i vari generi di manga e anime in riferimento alle antiche stampe shunga.
L’erogekiga e il lolicon, due generi sviluppatisi negli anni Sessanta/Ottanta.
Il rapporto di anime e manga con la “censura”.
L’arrivo e l’accoglienza del genere erotico in Italia.
3. I generi erotici di manga e anime, visti in rapporto alle shunga e alla tradizione giapponese: mostri e tentacoli; vita quotidiana; utilizzo di metafore e allegorie; ambientazione storica (con diretti riferimenti allo stile delle shunga); shonen ai (il fumetto omoerotico); lolicon (il “complesso di Lolita”, fumetti con giovanissime).

The exhibition “Shunga and manga Art and Eros in Japan in the Edo period and in the comics and cartoons in the current Heisei period” consists of three sections.
1. The manga and anime heirs of ukiyo-e.
2. Outline of the history of erotic anime and manga in Japan.
The works and the most important authors of the various genres of manga and anime in reference to the old prints shunga.
The erogekiga and the lolicon, two genres that have developed in the sixties/eighties.
The connection between anime and manga with “censorship”.
The arrival and the reception of the erotic genre in Italy.
3. The kinds of erotic anime and manga, in relation to shunga and to the Japanese tradition: monsters and tentacles; daily life; use of metaphors and allegories; historical setting (with direct references to the style of shunga); shonen ai (homoerotic comics); lolicon (the “Lolita complex”, comics with young girls).

Sesso ed erotismo, da quello più goliardico e parodistico a quello più perverso e bizzarro.
Le shunga erano per gli uomini dei Playboy dell’era Tokugawa, un metodo più economico rispetto alla frequentazione di prostitute e bordelli ed avevano gli stessi bassi scopi attribuiti ai manga hentai.
Per le donne invece le shunga erano dei manuali per l’apprendimento dell’educazione sessuale, e venivano regalati alle giovani inesperte, alle future spose e alle cortigiane. Un attuale manga hentai di questo tipo è Futari Etchi (ふたりエッチ, Futari Ecchi) di Katsu Aki.

Sex and eroticism, from the funniest and the most parodyong to the most perverse and bizarre.
The shunga were for the men like the Playboy in the Tokugawa period, a method more economical than frequenting prostitutes and brothels and they had the same low purpose attributed to manga hentai.
For women, instead the shunga were manuals for the learning of sex education, and were given as a present to young inexperienced girls, to the brides and courtesans. A current hentai manga of this type is Futari Etchi (ふたり エッチ, Futari Ecchi) by Katsu Aki.

Il metodo di stampa utilizzato dalle shunga, la xilografia, e dai manga, la stampa rotocalco o in piano, ha reso queste opere economiche e ne ha facilitato la diffusione.

• Ambientazioni / Set

I luoghi della quotidianità.
Le stampe shunga sono ambientate in interni divisi da paraventi in carta, che forniscono un eccitante voyeurismo. Nei manga la stessa funzione viene assolta dagli arredi degli spogliatoi scolastici, le telecamere di sorveglianza o i telefonini che scattano fotografie di nascosto.

The places of everyday life.
Shunga prints are set in the interior divided by paper screens, providing an exciting voyeurism. In the manga the same function is carried out by the furniture of the locker rooms in the school, by the surveillance cameras or by the mobile phones that take photos secretly.

• Censure / Censors

Nei manga notiamo spesso l’utilizzo di pecette varie e oggetti atti a nascondere parti del corpo, ma spesso pensiamo erroneamente che con ciò si voglia mitigarne il tratto erotico. Il Giappone proibisce sì la visione del pelo pubico e dei genitali, ma questa censura è diventuta parte integrante, funzionale ed eccitante.
Simbologie legate a fiori e animali sono riscontrabili nelle stampe shunga così come nei manga: il crisantemo o il garofano simboleggiano l’ano, l’orchidea o la rosa per la vulva, i petali nell’aria la deflorazione.
I genitali, anche se censurati nei manga, assumono dimensioni abnormi: per ironia, gusto del paradosso e caricatura.

In the manga there are often used paper patches or objects to hide parts of the body, but we often mistakenly think that is useful to decrease the eroticism. Japan bans the vision of pubic hair and genitals, but this censorship has become an integral, functional and exciting part.
Symbolism associated with flowers and animals are found in the shunga prints as well as in the manga: the chrysanthemum and carnation symbolize the anus, the orchid and the rose symbolize the vulva, the petals in the air symbolize defloration.
The genitals, even if are censored in manga, assume abnormal size: ironically, for the paradoxical and caricatural taste.

Suddivisione in diversi generi per venire incontro ai gusti di un vasto pubblico.
Le shunga erano divise in: mukurae (immagini del guanciale), waraie (immagini esilaranti), koshokujibon (libri lussuriosi)… Così come i manga hentai si suddividono in: lolicon (il complesso di Lolita), shotacon (interesse verso i ragazzetti), yaoi (coppie maschili omosessuali), yuri (coppie femminili omosessuali), tentacle rape (in cui tentacoli sostituiscono il fallo), futanari (ermafroditi o donne con genitali maschili)…
I manga hentai vengono divisi principalmente in 3 categorie: eterosessuali (abbreviata con “het“), yaoi (uomini omosessuali) e yuri (donne omosessuali).
Riguardo al genere manga yaoi, affonda la sua origine nella “via degli uomini” (nando), ritenuta una naturale alternativa a quella delle donne (nyodo). Molte stampe shunga avevano per soggetto l’amore tra uomini e ciò era particolarmente diffuso nella classe militare, dove, seguendo i principi di lealtà, devozione e sacrificio, i samurai si legavano ai paggi che ricoprivano il ruolo passivo di ototobun (fratello minore) o ai coetanei. Con l’avvento dell’epoca Tokugawa e la nascita del teatro kabuki, interamente composto di uomini, l’omosessualità maschile diventa meno romantica. I giovani attori sono spesso prostituti e i più ambiti sono gli onnagata, gli interpreti di ruoli femminili.
Proprio negli anni 70 gli amori tra uomini hanno riacquistato popolarità grazie alla nascita del genere manga shonen ai, “amori maschili”: creato da mangaka donne, tratta il tema dell’ambiguità sessuale e dalle figure di bishonen, “bei ragazzi” dalle caratteristiche androgine, attualizzando i temi della “via degli uomini”. Uno dei primi fu Il poema del vento e degli alberi (Kaze to ki no uta) di Keiko Takemiya. Dagli anni 80 inoltre si è sviluppata un folta produzione di dojinshi (le fanzine), dove i manga e anime più popolari sono reinterpretati in chiave omoerotica. Attualmente, questo genere, ribattezzato “boy’s love”, è uno tra i più prolifici in Giappone, con riviste, collane editoriali ad esso dedicate e ha una vasta gamma di temi.

The shunga were divided into: mukurae (images of the pillow), waraie (hilarious images), koshokujibon (lustful books)… Like the hentai manga are divided into: lolicon (Lolita complex), shotacon (interest in boys), yaoi (male homosexual couples), yuri (female homosexual couples), tentacle rape (where tentacles replace the phallus) futanari (hermaphrodites or women with male genitals)…
The hentai manga are divided mainly into 3 categories: heterosexual (abbreviated “het“), yaoi (homosexual men) and yuri (lesbians).
Yaoi manga are deeply rooted in “the way of men” (nando), considered as the natural alternative to that of the way of women (nyodo). Many shunga prints had as subject the love between men and this was particularly common in the military class, where, following the principles of loyalty, devotion and sacrifice, the samurai were bound to the pages that had the passive role of ototobun (younger brother). With the advent of the Tokugawa era and the birth of kabuki theater, composed entirely of men, male homosexuality became less romantic. The young actors are often prostitutes and the more desirable were onnagata, the performers of female roles.
In the 70s the love between men became more popular thanks to the birth of the genre shonen ai, “male love”, in the manga: created by female mangaka, it deals with themes like sexual ambiguity and the figures of Bishonen, “handsome guys” with androgynous characteristics , updating the themes of “the way of men”. One of the first of this genre is The Poem (Song) of the Wind and the Trees (Kaze to Ki no Uta) by Keiko Takemiya. From the 80s it has also developed a large production of dojinshi (fanzines), where the most popular manga and anime are reinterpreted in key homoerotic. Currently, this genre, renamed “boy’s love”, is one of the most prolific in Japan, with magazines, editorial series dedicated to it and it has a wide range of themes.
