From August 26 to September 22 you can admire, at the Ultralounge at Selfridges in London, 40-year history of shoes, signed by the grand dame of British fashion, the queen of punk, Vivienne Westwood.

Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibition - 1973-2010 is the most complete exhibition ever shown in Britain about the accessories of this extraordinary designer, who has always drawn inspiration from her English origin, transforming and revolutionizing the fashion scenario.

Pirates, Victorian dandies, tartan and toile fabric are just some of the 100%  British starting points, around which she developed the collections and the shoes that entered in the history of fashion.

One of the first shoes, which Vivienne Westwood bought, was a pair of stiletto in the 50s that she wore to school and her teacher said:
“Vivienne Swire [her maiden name], if God had intended us to walk on pins he would have given them to us.”

Vivienne’s answer probably is in these words:

I’m not one of those people who likes the ‘no makeup’ make up look, I like artificial things and I think that’s what we are. I think civilization is artificial, otherwise we would be living in trees and it’s wonderful walking in shoes.

In a black minimalist mounting, that enhances the shoes of the designer, more than 200 models are shown, each with its own history, each placed in the collective memory in its way.

After the 70s characterized by chains, ripped T-shirts and bondage gear, the 80s was the time of the New Romantics and Vivienne Westwood made “Pirate” collection, which was very successful in Paris.

In the 90s the inspiration is British wools and tartans, which are fashionable and will inspire even the East.
We Kawaii girls remember the unrestrained use of Tartan models and of Rocking Horse shoes which Ai Yazawa draws on Nana, the protagonist of her famous manga.
Just in Japan Vivienne Westwood is very successful and says:

The young Japanese, especially, love to wear the latest thing and when they come to London they head for my shops as part of what they want to find in Britain.

At last, as it can be seen in the photographs of the exhibition, it is famous Naomi Campbell’s fall on March 17, 1993, during Vivienne Westwood fashion show in Paris, because of the Mock Crock-Elevated Gillies shoes.
Remembering this event, the designer says:

She looked like a gazelle in slow motion. It was fantastic, she never looked more beautiful.
She’s a very proud woman of course, and so she laughed, but when she got backstage she was so angry with me.

Who won’t admire this exhibition like me, they will be content to watch the photos of the shoes shown in this article.

Shoes must have very high heels and platforms to put women’s beauty on a pedestal.

I’m not trying to do something different, I’m trying to do the same thing but in a different way.

The only possible effect one can have on the world is through unpopular ideas.
