The surreal imagery evoked by Mark Ryden, a kind of Wonderland inhabited by deliciously creepy creatures, matches perfectly with the plot of the show: a young boy overindulges at a Viennese pastry shop, and falls into a delirium, dreaming about Princess Praline and her court who rescue him from his doctor.

‘I needed a designer to create a wild world. I came across these fascinating images—very detailed, beautifully done and disturbing and sinister—all of that hidden under saccharine, sweet images of children.’

‘To contrast with all the light and fluffy stuff, we have the dark, threatening scene of the boy in the hospital.’
