Non Solo Kawaii

Dopo lunghi mesi di attesa dalla Prima tenutasi al Teatro Sistina a Roma il 28 ottobre 2009, finalmente sbarca a Milano, al Forum (Allianz Teatro) di Assago, Cats, il musical pluripremiato che vanta la traduzione in 10 lingue e che è stato rappresentato in più di 300 città in 26 nazioni sparse per tutto il mondo.
Finalmente è stata realizzata anche la versione italiana, messa in scena dalla Compagnia della Rancia, e il Kawaii Team il 26 gennaio è stato invitato all’anteprima milanese dello spettacolo.

After some long months’ wait from the première at the Sistina Theatre in Rome on October 28, 2009, finally Cats comes to Milan, at the Forum (Allianz Theatre) in Assago, the award-winning musical that boasts translations into 10 languages and has been represented in more than 300 cities in 26 countries scattered around the world.
Finally it was also conducted the Italian version, staged by the Compagnia della Rancia, and the Kawaii Team on January 26 was invited to the Milanese preview.

• Storia dello Spettacolo / History of the Show

Come tutti sapranno Cats è il celebre musical composto da Andrew Lloyd Webber sui testi adattati della raccolta di poesie per bimbi “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” di Thomas Stearns Eliot, e ha debuttato l’11 maggio 1981 al New London Theater di Londra, totalizzando nella sola città di Londra 8.949 repliche fino all’11 maggio 2002, quando lo spettacolo ebbe la sua conclusione con una grandiosa proiezione a Covent Garden.
A Brooadway Cats è stato messo in scena ininterrottamente dal 7 ottobre 1982 al 10 settembre 2000 per un totale di 7.485 repliche.

As we all know Cats is the famous musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber on adapted texts of the children’s poetry book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by Thomas Stearns Eliot, and debuted on May 11, 1981, to New London Theater in London, making only in London 8,949 repeats up to May 11, 2002, when the show ended with a great projection in Covent Garden.
In Brooadway Cats has been staged without interruption since October 7, 1982, to September 10, 2000, for a total of 7,485 repeats.

• La Trama / The Plot

Vengono narrate le vicende dei gatti della tribù di Jellicle che come ogni anno si riuniscono di notte a festeggiare il loro capo Deuteronomio, che sceglierà chi avrà l’onore di rinascere passando al “Dolce Aldilà”.
I gatti, così, a turno iniziano a raccontare la loro storia e tra di loro c’è Grisabella, un tempo gattina ammirata, ma ormai vecchia ed emarginata. L’antagonista è sempre in agguato e in Cats si chiama Macavity, gatto crudele, che rapirà e cercherà di sostituirsi a Deuteronomio, ma verrà smascherato.
Nella parte finale c’è la famosa scena dell’assolo di Grisabella che intonerà “Memory” (in italiano “Ricordi”) ricordando i felici giorni del passato e che sarà la prescelta per la rinascita.
Il ruolo di Grisabella è interpretato dalla bravissima Giulia Ottonello, che i più ricorderanno come vincitrice della seconda edizione della trasmissione televisiva ”Amici”, ma che nel frattempo ha maturato molte esperienze nel campo dello spettacolo tra cui citiamo la sua partecipazione al musical “Cantando sotto la pioggia” sempre della Compagnia della Rancia e alla versione italiana del film “Come d’incanto” della Walt Disney Pictures dove presta la voce, nelle parti cantate, alla Principessa Giselle.

It is told the stories of the tribe of Jellicle cats that every year gets together at night to celebrate their leader Deuteronomy, who will choose who will have the honor of being reborn through the “Heaviside Layer”.
So the cats in turn begin to tell their story and among them there is Grizabella, once admired kitten, but now old and outcast. The antagonist is always lurking and is Macavity, a cruel cat, that will kidnap and try to take the place of Deuteronomy, but he will be unmasked.
In the final part there is the famous scene of the Grizabella’s solo who will sing “Memory” remembering the happy days of the past and she will be chosen for the rebirth.
The role of is Grizabella is played by a very good Giulia Ottonello, remembered by many people as the winner of the second edition of the italian TV show “Amici”, but in the meantime she has acquired experience in the field of entertainment, for example she was involved in the italian version of the musical “Singin’ in the Rain” by Compagnia della Rancia and she sang the italian songs of Princess Giselle in “Enchanted” by Walt Disney.

Dialoghi parlati? Nessuno. Solo canzoni ben interpretate dalle bellissime voci femminili e maschili degli attori e accompagnate dall’orchestra dal vivo.
Il musical tiene in tensione per tutta la durata (circa 2 ore e mezza), sia per la musica ricca di pathos, sia per la tristezza di alcune canzoni. Momenti intervallati da gioiose presentazioni delle diverse tipologie di gatto.
Quello che più mi ha impressionato nel musical Cats sono stati i balli corali che raccoglievano in coreografie feline 20 attori. Sembrava veramente che sul palcoscenico ci fossero dei gatti.
Consigliato a tutti gli adulti, anche se allergici ai gatti.

Spoken dialogue? None. Only well-interpreted songs from the beautiful male and female voices of the actors and accompanied by live orchestra.
The musical involves for the whole duration (about 2 ½ hours), both for the music full of pathos, and for the sadness of some songs. There moments were alternate by the joyful stories of the many cats.
What most impressed me in the musical Cats were the choreographies that gathered 20 cat-players. It really seemed that on the stage there were cats.
Recommended for all adults, even though allergic to cats.

È uno spettacolo irrinunciabile per gli amanti dei musical e per chi vuole approcciarsi a questo genere, perchè la qualità dello spettacolo è ottima: l’orchestra dal vivo è coinvolgente e riesce a creare un filo invisibile tra palco e spettatori, le coreografie sono frizzanti, originali e sembra davvero di guardare dei gatti in festa.
Se aggiungiamo che il livello del cast è molto alto è uno spettacolo proprio da non perdere, un plauso speciale a Giulia Ottonello, la cui intepretazione arriva al cuore.
E se avrete la fortuna di vedere lo spettacolo nei posti più vicini, i gatti di Jellicle faranno un’incursione tra le vostre poltrone.

It is a show not to be missed for musical lovers and for those who want to get closer to this genre, because the quality of the performance is excellent: the live orchestra is involving and can create an invisible connection between stage and audience, the choreography is lively, original and it seems to really watch some cats in celebration.
If we add that the level of the cast is very high, it’ is just a show not to be missed, a special applause to Giulia Ottonello, whose interpretation goes to the heart.
If you are so lucky to watch the show in the seats closer to the stage, the Jellicle Cats will patter around your seats.
