Non Solo Kawaii

Maruja Fuentes è architetto e docente alla International School of Design of the Turabo in Puerto Rico, la sua città natale, e focalizza le sue ricerche sul design sostenibile, sperimentando con diversi materiali e lavorando per la realizzazione di complementi di arredo con un basso impatto ambientale.
Trovo che i suoi progetti siano molto vicini alle persone e alla natura, una sorta di collegamento che li unisce, un mezzo che permetta di metterli in comunicazione.

Maruja Fuentes is an architect and a professor at the International School of Design of the Turabo in Puerto Rico, whose home town, and she focuses her research on sustainable design, experimenting with different materials and working on eco-friendly furniture’s.
I found her projects very close to people and nature, a kind of connection between them, a means of making them communicate.

• 1. Quanto ha influito essere nata a Puerto Rico nello sviluppo di una tua identità come architetto e designer?
  1. How much your home town, Puerto Rico, has influenced your point of view as architect and designer?

Credo molto, crescere in un’isola tropicale mi ha insegnato l’importanza della natura e dei suoi vantaggi.
Inoltre ho avuto l’opportunità di iniziare i miei studi di architettura qui presso l’Università di Puerto Rico, dove si concentra la progettazione ambientale dandomi il mio primo o iniziale punto di partenza verso quello che faccio ora sul design verde.

I believe a lot, growing up in a tropical island tough me the importance of nature and its advantages. Also I had the opportunity to start my architectural studies here at the University of Puerto Rico where they where focused on environmental design giving me my first or starting point toward what I do now on green design.

• 2. Nel tuo sito dici: “La maggioranza dei miei concept deriva dalla natura e dagli aspetti della vita quotidiana che solitamente non si notano e si danno per scontati”.
  Pensi che ispirarsi alle cose semplici aiuti a realizzare oggetti di design più vicini alle persone?
  2. In your website you said: “The majority of my concepts are derived from nature and aspects of daily life that usually go unnoticed or taken for granted”.
  Do think that inspiration from simple things helps to create design objects nearer to people?

Mi piacerebbe credere che in qualche modo sia così. Guardare la natura ed essere più in contatto con le cose che facciamo nella nostra attività quotidiana ci aiuta a sviluppare idee sulla base delle nostre esigenze, ed il risultato finale potrebbe diventare più accessibile alle persone.

I would like to believe that in some sort of way it does. See by looking at nature and being more in touch with the things that we do in our daily activities helps us to develop ideas based on our needs which its end result could become more approachable to the people.

• 3. Pensi che un architetto o un designer abbia un impegno più grande verso l’ambiente rispetto ad un impiegato, per esempio?
  3. Do you think that an architect or a designer has a bigger engagement toward environment than an office worker, for example?

Noi abbiamo un impatto sul mondo del design e del suo utilizzo. Ma credo che ognuno di noi ha una grande influenza sull’ambiente che può differire nella portata, ma è ancora più efficace.

We do make an impact on the world of design and its usage. But I believe that everyone has a big influence on the environment it may differ in scale but is still as effective.

• 4. Green Pockets e Leaning-Molds possono essere composti come dei puzzle. Quanto è importante per te la flessibilità nell’arredo?
  4. Green Pockets and Leaning-Molds could be assembled like a puzzle. How much is important for you to make flexible furniture?

Mi piace la flessibilità, è una parte importante in alcuni dei miei progetti. Io credo che solo l’aggiunta e l’eliminazione degli elementi possa svolgere un ruolo importante nella trasformazione di uno spazio.

I like flexibility, is a big part on some of my designs. I just believe that it can play a big role on transformation of a space the adding and eliminating of the elements.

• 5. Green Pockets è una idea carina per portare a casa un angolo di verde. Dove hai trovato l’ispirazione?
  5. Green Pockets are a cute idea to bring at home a little green space. Where did you find inspiration?

Mi semplicementente venuta… è davvero difficile da spiegare, ma è quello che è successo. L’idea mi venne in mente una volta saputo che il tema del Salone Satellite 2009 [c'erano soluzioni di design appositamente per questo evento] era il Benessere. Facendo la mia indagine, mi è sembrato davvero opportuno portare la natura all’interno dello spazio per ossigenare e per portare salute. Ho visto il muro come una semplice T-shirt bianca che aveva qualche tasca vuota per la vegetazione. E in fondo è quello che ho progettato sono piastrelle che sembrano tasche nel muro per la vegetazione. In sintesi, l’ispirazione è stata la parola Benessere.

It just came to me… is really hard to explain but here it goes. The ideas showed up to my brain once I knew the theme for the Salone Satelitte 2009 [there were specially design for this event] the theme was Wellness. As I did my investigation it just seem so appropriate to bring nature inside a space to oxygenate and to bring health. I saw the wall as a plain white T-shirt that had some empty pockets for vegetation. And basically that’s what I design tiles that seem like pockets in the wall for vegetation. In summary the inspiration was the word Wellness.

  Hai scelto questo modo di comunicare perchè Leaning-molds sono più vicini a persone giovani, dinamiche e energiche?
  6. Photos of Leaning-molds are associated with an urban and young environment.
  Did you choose this way to communicate because Leaning-molds are nearer to young, dynamic, energetic people?

A essere sinceri la mia idea era di progettare mobili per qualsiasi area pubblica, non a un pubblico particolare. L’immagine che ho scelto è basata sull’espressione artistica che abbiamo qui a Puerto Rico nelle nostre fermate degli autobus e ho pensato che potesse essere interessante per iniziare a guardare la mia opera, come un’opera d’arte immaginaria; il risultato era che sembrava più di un paesaggio urbano.

To be honest my idea was to design furniture for any public area, not to any particular audience. The image that I chose was bases on the artistic expression we have here in Puerto Rico at our bus stops and I though it might be interesting to start looking at my piece as a fictional piece of art; which it’s result made it look more of an urban landscape.

  Nesting lamp porta all’interno della casa un po’ di natura o spinge le persone a riscoprire la voglia di vivere a contatto con la natura?
  7. Nesting Lamp calls up a bird’s nest.
  Does nesting lamp bring a bit of nature in a house or push people to discover the will to live closer to nature?

Nesting lamp è una delle indagini sui materiali naturali. Come un nido di uccelli è costituito da oggetti naturali trovati, qui la lampada applica lo stesso concetto ed è modellata e fatta con materiali naturali trovati in casa come il filo, la lanugine [il materiale di cotone trovato nel phon] e l’amido. Piuttosto semplice.

Nesting lamp is one of an investigation of natural materials. Like a birds nest is made from natural found objects where the lamp does the same is shaped and done with natural materials found in ones house, which are thread, fluff [the cotton material found in the dryer] and starch. Pretty simple.

• 8. Ti auguri che ci sia qualche cambiamento nel futuro del design?
  8. Do you wish any change in the future of design?

Credo che il cambiamento sta avvenendo, vedo più designer ogni giorno tornare alle proprie radici, sperimentare e lavorare di più con la produzione tradizionale, nonché con i materiali naturali.

I believe the change is happening I’m seeing more designer every day going back to their roots, experimenting and working more with traditional manufacturing as well as natural materials.

• 9. Puoi dirci su che progetto sei impegnata adesso?
  9. Could you tell us on what kind of projects are you working by now?

Sto lavorando a diversi progetti che non sono ancora finiti, sono in corso. Mi piacerebbe dirvi di più, ma ho imparato a non bruciare le tappe e non dire nulla fino a che non siano finiti o per non rovinare la sorpresa.

I’m working on several projects which are not yet finished, they are in process. I would love to tell you more about them but I have learn threw time not to tell until they are finished or it will spoil its surprise.
