Gary Fernandez è un illustratore di origini spagnole che attualmente risiede ad Atlanta (USA).
La sua carriera ha iniziato ad avere successo mentre lavorava per la rivista spagnola Vanidad. Come freelance ha lavorato per grandi marchi come Coca Cola, Volkswagen, MTV, Microsoft, Nokia e Wordpress.
Nel 2008 ha pubblicato la sua prima raccolta di illustrazioni dal titolo “Introduction to Fantastic Girls, Future Landscapes & The Most Beautiful Birds Ever Seen” (Introduzione a Ragazze Fantastiche, Paesaggi Futuristici & Uccelli Più Belli Mai Visti).
Come potrete vedere dalle immagini seguenti il suo stile è originale e onirico, ha un affascinante senso delle proporzioni e della composizione.

Gary Fernandez is a Spanish illustrator who currently lives in Atlanta (USA).
His career began to be successful while he was working for Vanidad, a Spanish magazine. He worked as a freelance for famous brands such as Coca Cola, Volkswagen, MTV, Microsoft, Nokia and Wordpress.
He published his first collection of illustrations entitled “Introduction to Fantastic Girls, Future Landscapes & the Most Beautiful Birds Ever Seen” in 2008.
As you can see in the photos below his style is original and dreamy, he has a fascinating sense of proportion and composition.

1. Quando materializzi le tue idee, pianifichi tutto nei minimi dettagli prima di disegnare o sei istintivo?
1. When your ideas take shapes, do you design everything in detail before drawing or are you impulsive?

Direi che il 50% del processo è molto impulsivo ed intuitivo e l’altro 50% totalmente l’opposto. È molto più meditato.
Penso che per ottenere freschezza e fluidità, è necessario lavorare in modo più intuitivo. Ma per ottenere qualcosa di più forte devi andare avanti e indietro per rimuovere gli “errori”.

I would say 50% of the process is very impulsive and intuitive and the other 50% totally the opposite. It’s much more meditated.
I think to get freshness and fluidity, it’s necessary to work in a more intuitive way. But to get something stronger you need to go back and forth to remove ‘error’.

2. Quanto è importante sperimentare sia con la tecnica che con i soggetti e la composizione?
2. How is important to experiment with the technique, the subjects and the composition?

La sperimentazione è la chiave dell’innovazione e del miglioramento in tutte le diverse aree. Credo fortemente che il fallimento sia una parte importante del mio processo, al fine di ottenere qualcosa di interessante per migliorare il mio lavoro. Tuttavia la sperimentazione significa un enorme investimento di tempo, energia e motivazione (e denaro). Devi essere paziente per vedere qualcosa che si può usare. Comunque, alla fine della giornata puoi scoprire 100 nuove strade da non intraprendere (la maggior parte delle volte) e, se sei fortunato, qualcosa di abbastanza interessante da aggiungere al tuo lavoro!

Ho impiegato molto tempo ad andare avanti e indietro con i concept e le tecniche che volevo sperimentare. La maggior parte del tempo è abbastanza frustrante, perché non si vede alcun progresso reale, e non sei nemmeno in grado di mostrare quello che hai fatto di recente. Ma penso di avere la sensazione che il lavoro sta emergendo e sta prendendo forma in qualche modo.

Experimentation is key of innovation and improvement in all different areas. I truly believe in failure as an important part of my process in order to get something interesting to improve my work. However experimentation means a huge investment of time, energy and motivation -and money-. You have to be patient to see something you can use. Anyway, at the end of the day you will discover 100 new ways NOT to take -most of the time- and if you’re lucky enough something interesting to add to your work!

I’ve been quite a lot of time going back and forth with concepts and techniques I wanted to try. Most of the time, it’s quite frustrating, because you don’t see any real advance, and also you’re not able to show what you’ve been doing lately. But I think I’m now feeling all that work is emerging and getting real in some way.

3. Quali sono gli artisti che ti influenzano di più e quali artisti invece, nonostante ti attraggano, non credi che influenzino il tuo lavoro?
3. Which are the artists that influence you the most and instead which artists don’t influence your work even if you like them?

Credo che qualsiasi cosa ci piaccia ci influenzi in un modo o nell’altro. Tuttavia, ultimamente non ho così tanti artisti in mente, ma vecchi libri che trovo nei negozi di antiquariato, ricchi di immagini realizzate da artisti sconosciuti di altri tempi.

I guess whatever you like influences you in one way or another. Nevertheless, lately I don’t have so many artists in mind, but old books I find in antique stores, full of images made by unknown artist from other times.

4. Ad alcuni il tuo stile ricorda Salvador Dalì. Pensi che questo paragone sia fondato?
Ti senti lusingato dai “paragoni” illustri oppure preferiresti non rientrare nelle categorie?
4. Your style reminds Salvador Dali of some people. Do you think that this comparison is founded?
Are you flattered by illustrious “comparisons” or would you rather not be categorised?

Sembra un paragone troppo illustre ed è un grande onore per me, di sicuro. Ma non vedo troppe similitudini, esteticamente. Sono d’accordo nel fatto che il mio lavoro rientra nel campo dell’irreale e dei sogni, ecc., così come il suo lavoro.

It sounds too high and it is a big honor for me, for sure. But I don’t see too many similarities, aesthetically. I would agree in the fact that my work is about the unreal, and dreams, etc, as well as his work.

5. Hai dichiarato che una grande fonte di ispirazione per te è la musica e il ritmo ti accompagna nella composizione dell’illustrazione.
Credi che alcune illustrazioni sarebbero state differenti se in quel periodo avessi ascoltato un altro tipo di musica?
5. You’ve said that music is a great source of inspiration for you and the rhythm accompanies the composition of your illustration.
Do you think that some of your illustrations would have been different if you had heard a different kind of music at that time?

Sì, sicuramente. Io di solito ascolto musica diversa a seconda del progetto in cui sono coinvolto, ma in realtà in un modo molto naturale e intuitivo. Niente di troppo premeditato. Anche se ci sono molti altri aspetti della vita quotidiana che influnzano quello che faccio, penso che la musica abbia più potere.

Yes, definitely. I usually listen to different music depending on the project I’m involved in. But in a very organic and intuitive way. Nothing too much premeditated. Although there are many other aspects of the daily life that also affect what you’re doing, I think music has more power.

6. Nelle tue illustrazioni troviamo spesso donne, animali e strumenti musicali. Qual è il soggetto che non ti stancheresti mai di disegnare e che ti ispira maggiormente?
6. In your illustrations the subjects often are women, animals and musical instruments. What is the subject that you’ll never tire of drawing and that inspires you most?

Credo che le donne e gli animali saranno sempre presenti ed è una storia d’amore senza fine con questi soggetti. Vedo quello che sto facendo come una grande orchestra di personaggi. Giorno per giorno l’orchestra è in cresciuta e ci sono più personaggi che vi suonano. L’orchestrazione di tutti questi elementi è importante per me.

I think women and animals will always be present and it’s a never ending love story with those subjects. I see what I’m doing like a big orchestra of characters. Day by day the orchestra is growing and there are more and more characters playing there. The orchestration of all those elements is important for me.

7. Sappiamo che non ti piace parlare dei tuoi lavori, preferisci lasciare ad ognuno la sua interpretazione.
Qual è stato il riscontro più bello che hai avuto da chi osserva le tue illustrazioni e cosa provi quando mostri per la prima volta dei nuovi lavori?
7. We know that you do not like to talk about your work and you prefer that people are free to give their own interpretation.
What has been the most beautiful comment from those who watched your illustrations and how you feel when you show your new works for the first time?

Mi piace ricevere commenti e domande dagli spettatori e dai clienti quando si guarda il nuovo lavoro. Quando il feedback diventa entusiasmo da parte loro è ancora meglio. La più grande emozione è quando persino lo spettatore comprende il lavoro nello stesso modo in cui l’avevo concepito!

I love receiving feedback and questions from viewers and clients when looking at the new work. When the feedback also becomes excitement from them it’s even better. The greatest feeling is when the viewer even understands the work in the same way I do!

8. Lavoravi per una rivista di moda a Madrid e dopo aver pubblicato le tue illustrazioni, hai iniziato a ricevere commissioni che ti hanno portato ad essere illustratore full-time.
Quali sono state le tappe più importati che hanno determinato la tua carriera da freelance e che consigli daresti a chi vuole intraprendere questo lavoro?
8. You worked in a fashion magazine in Madrid and after publishing your illustrations, you began to get commissions that have pushed you to become a full-time illustrator.
What were the most important steps that led to your freelance career and what would you advise to those who want to take up this job?

Per me è stato davvero veloce. Ho inserito una serie di opere pubblicate e inedite nel mio portfolio e ho iniziato a chiamare le agenzie pubblicitarie. Poco dopo gli incontri, stavo lavorando per una grande campagna pubblicitaria in Spagna, che mi ha dato la possibilità di avere come opzione di vita il lavoro di illustratore freelance a tempo pieno.
Non mi piace consigliare a nessuno perché ritengo che ciò che ha funzionato per me non significhi necessariamente che funzionerà per qualcun altro… vorrei solo dire di cercare la propria strada nel campo in cui ci si sente più a proprio agio lavorare e di essere sicuri di sè. È tutto quello che vorrei dire. Non ci sono regole in questo gioco. Tutto è possibile.

For me it was really quick. I compiled a bunch of published and un-published works in my book and started calling ad agencies. Short time after the meetings, I was working in a big ad campaign in Spain, which gave me the chance to get a full time freelance illustrator option of life.
I don’t like to advise anyone since I feel that what worked for me doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for someone else… I would just say look for your own way in the area you feel more comfortable to work in and be self-confident. That’s all I would say. There are no rules in this game. Everything is possible.

9. Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?
9. What are your future plans?

Sono in un momento della mia vita in cui lascio soltanto che le cose accadano. Non ho un vero e proprio piano in realtà. Sto solo godendo il più possibile del fatto di lavorare con persone simpatiche a dei progetti meravigliosi.

I’m in a moment of my life in which I’m just letting things happen. I don’t have a real new plan actually. I’m just enjoying as much as possible working with nice people in wonderful projects.
